    It's not 1995 :)

Hence my first comment. People really shouldn't skim read a thread if they are going to comment ;)

But it's not really relevant as most multi retailer vouchers still come in paper form (although love2shop have introduced a plastic swipe voucher) and as you helpfully pointed out it's no longer 1995 :D

I am 37 years old and have known for at least 20 years that shop vouchers don't give change. They all say it on every voucher I've ever come across (if you actually bother to read them).

    Seriously, how old are you?

Mmmmm I'm 38, and disagree with you! They have to give you change! However, its up to them whether you get cash or store vouchers in return. Its a different matter for that get £5 free voucher promotion. I certainly have had change in vouchers (after using vouchers) in Argos,Boots, BHS and New Look.

Last week I used a paper Matalan voucher and it came to £12.odd. I asked whether I should pay £10 or £15 in vouchers and they told me that if it was a voucher it was treated as cash and they had to give change so I paid with £15 and was given the change in cash.

Also to add that it depends on who has issued the voucher, if it is a voucher valid in lots of places such as Love2shop then they have had the money, not the retailer, so there will probably be no change.

If the voucher was bought from the shop then they have had the money and should give you change or the balance on a gift card (I have an M&S one with about 38p on it for example).

    Not necessarily.
That would depend on the terms of the contract - for which two usually exist.

The contract for the purchase of the gift voucher - whereby buyer and seller agree terms of these vouchers.
The contract for the purchase of goods using the vouchers. Usually by a third party as often vouchers are gifts. Being subjected to the original terms agreed. Also impossible for a third party to dispute the terms agreed in the original contract since they are not party to it.

So no, i'd say they don't have to give change from the vouchers. There's no law covering this so it would be down to contractual terms and subject to a test of fairness - which all seems fair to me

I think when the op said 'change' they meant 'cash' lots of you are muddying the waters by confusing change as in cash and change as in vouchers.

Couple of you ought to pull your necks in too. Some nasty things going on here. No need for it.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

I bought a £9.99 item with a £10 voucher and they gave me a penny change, I was very surprised.
