Do you give your domestic cat chicken on the bone?

Hi All

I had a conversation recently with others concerning foods which domestic cats eat. food, chicken and bones was mentioned, with a disagreement over the safety of giving chicken on the bone to cats.

Do you give chicken on the bone to your domestic cat{s}? is there a danger a bone swallowed could tear the inside of the cat? are bones not difficult to digest for cats? should cats not been provided any form of bones, i am interested to hear from cat lovers

My cats get raw chicken on the bone. Mostly wings. When they catch their own food they eat the lot bones and all. Cats, however, should not be given cooked bones.

Raw bone is softer than cooked bone. Cooking bones can make them quite brittle, and this is where they pose the risk of causing damage to the throat, stomach, intestines, etc.

Tis true - cats are hunters and they will eat whatever they catch 'bones and all'. but its 'RAW'. cooked bones go brittle and are dangerous to both humans and cats and dogs.

I used to occasionally give mine a raw chicken wing but stopped after the vet discouraged it as it can cause constipation. But that's raw food in general, not the bones.

They used to enjoy chewing the bone sometimes. Certainly couldn't see any harm coming from it

We don't give bones to ours but they sometimes help themselves from the bin. Usually signalled by the whole thing going flying and the contents strewn across the kitchen. Now we tend to put bones in a smaller bag and straight out the front to the big bin.

Offal (e.g. liver) does the opposite, so when my dogs get meals high in bone (they're raw-fed) I tend to give some offal alongside it to counteract the effects

I'm sure your vet has been confused, a raw diet is much better for your cat, but it must be a well balenced diet, including everything your cat needs. I've just come on here asking for advice on that very subject. :-)

We've never given our cats chicken bones, we tend to pull it off the bone and just give them pure meat. I reckon raw bones are alright as that's what they'd eat if they'd caught the chicken, but cooked chicken bones tend to splinter really easily which is why dogs aren't supposed to have them

Raw bone is fine - cooked is not and should never be given


As to whether it's safe - look at their natural diet in the wild .... mice / birds etc - they have bones!
