And six nations is my only plan this weekend other than not dragging myself out of bed at 5.30am! Might even be able to talk misery guts into coming 1p shopping with me

  • It's Friday, so that means it's Microwave Cake in a Mug Day at work, an occasional event of my own devising. On today's menu is Gooey Chocolate Sponge - num num num num

So grab a spoon and help yourselves.

bubbs, it's perfect for your hotel microwave.

And purpledonkey, it would make an ideal 'signature bake' in the GBBO. A three-hour time limit, so five minutes to make and cook, leaving two hours fifty-five minutes to check out the latest glitches on your laptop and with plenty of time to nip out to the nearest supermarket.

I am now going for lie-down with chocolate-smeared lips while rubbing my belly and softly groaning.:)

    Xmas Saver!
This isn't meant to sound flippant or to demean the hardships of people who really do have very limited food budget to live on, but that's a piece of p1ss. My monthly food/drink spends are regularly around the £30-£35 mark, and if I spend over £50 it's been a very expensive month. (I keep all receipts and add up at month-end.) That's just for me; there's no Jelly tots to feed.
Coincidentally, last February I wanted to run down my freezer and cupboard stock, so I set myself a no-spend-on-groceries challenge. Bear in mind I only have a fridge-freezer, and a tins & dried goods cupboard, so it's not like I had a mountain of food. It certainly was a challenge, and it made me think a lot about using different foodstuffs in different ways, but I went 27 days without any food/drink spends. (Just one day short of a full month! Drat!!!) Again, I'm not saying this for the kudos; it's just what happened.

I was thinking about doing something similar this February as well; though that would be easier, with the M/S stocks.:)

I have to agree with you. Like I said, 12 finest burgers for £4 gives you enough mince to last half the month, Tesco cooking bacon is £81p a pack and thats for £500g, so four days worth in that. A sack of spuds from a farm shop (20kg) is only a fiver, then with value tomatoes, pasta and flour you have all manner of things you can do.

I think they need to improve the challenge.....

At the moment I am still stocking up... The problem for us is we have quite expensive tastes. Since learning all the tricks and getting MOCs and stuff, our food bill has dropped significantly. ... Only way we could make it cheaper was swapping to Aldi and living on food that we didn't really "enjoy" - pasta 3 or 4 nights a week, no proper meat, etc.

I'm veggie, which is usually a cheaper way to eat.
