Which printer should I buy? Ink jet or Laser

Once again looking for advice. I got a refund on my Epson XP 605 from Curry's via Epson.
This has left me back to the drawing board Santer has suggested I start a new thread and state what my needs regarding printer is. For those who have not seen my post re the above printer sent for repair but what they did send me a replacement which had inks in it and it just refused to print anything and went on cleaning print heads until it then said do not recognise the ink please reinstall which just didn't work I was told that I should have received a printer with a set of inks and that no ink should have been in the printer. Looks like I may have been sent one which came in for repair but was sent to me in error. I really dug my heels in and thanks to Santer I was able to email them and copy that to the MD of Epson which may or may not have made any difference at all. When the replacement would not work I insisted on speaking to a Manager who called me back within 2 hrs. The first one did not have the authority to sanction a refund but she excalated it to another Manager who again called me within 2 hrs. She first wanted to check that the serial no on the printer I received had a different serial no to the origional. This is all a bit long winded but thanks to the advice on here persistance did pay off. Epson have also said as I did not purchase the ink from them they were unable to refund me on that They have said if and when I buy a. new printer if it is Epson then they will give me some ink as a gesture of good will
I only have experience with Epson and over 10 years had 3 printers Each has been 3 in 1 as I want to be able to scan copy and print.
I am not a heavy user and despite the 605 having a photo facility I have never used it.
I order grocery shopping online buy a fair no of things online so need to print off the orders. Also travel like train flights check in online etc Scan things and especially old photo's etc I also need to be able to copy I write letters both personal and to contact companies etc the usual sort of stuff. My biggest problem with the 605 which obviously had a ink head problems and having read some review on several web sites including Amazon Which etc there seems to be a problem with this printer with one person saying that they had 2 new printers with this problem right from the start. Another said that after 3 months head cleaning had to be repeated and of course this costs a lot of money in ink. The Epson guarantee which states you must use their ink.
My previous printers after an initial period I used JetTec ink without a problem There was no JetTec ink for this printer. Whilst all the problems with the printer and finally getting a refund I read quite a lot on line One of the things I read was that JetTec were being sued by Epson for using some of their technology Epson sued them but it was settled out of court in 2013 but had been ongoing for about 2 years. Apparently JetTec had some restrictions put on them and wonder if this is why no jetTec being available for the above printer
Some people have suggested that I should buy a Laser Printer. I have read a little on them just today and it seems like you can get colour which I would want to have but will it copy or scan? Prices seem to be very high for some and they also look much bulkier. Size is not too much of a problem as I have a desk top which is in a large cupboard on a trolley the processor sits on the bottom shelf and my printer has always been on that lower shelf. Cost of ink whilst this makes it costs but it is the print head blockage which is my main concern. Santer you say you have had or do have 7 Epson printers and use compatibles with them Presumably you have bought Epson because you have been happy with them. Of course it needs to be wifi and nowadays I use my laptop for 95% of the time. I have things on my desk top like my Dr website and having set the password on their and cant remember it but it is saved so I order repeat prescriptions on it. I also use it for Works as I have headings on this for letters I am not sure how to do this on the laptop as it has Word but not the Works I don't leave my printer for a prolonged period without printing anything as I know this can cause a problem with the print heads. I would not want to buy from Curry's as their attitude was not acceptable in terms of repair or refund which Epson did sanction They just kept telling me that despite my printer being under guarantee they said if I had bought their 3 year package I would have had the printer replaced without question. Telling me things like the till would not allow them to refund the money and that I could only have a gift card. Also telling me that printers do not use any ink in cleaning the print heads and this was from a Manager. Despite Epson saying I was to ask for a refund under the sale of goods act they were still refusing to do so. I had the name and the telephone contact for the Manager at Epson who had sanctioned this. I insisted that they call her and when he eventually did he was given a ref and I heard him saying so you will refund us. I had to stand my ground firmly and of course when I used the card I had purchased the printer with the refund went through without any problem I very much appreciate those of you who gave me advice with the struggle to get the refund or would have been happy with a new printer.
There is an article in this months Which magazine I subscribe to the monthly sub has gone down. While I read through that I am not always understanding everything. Also they are only reviewing several but certainly not all on the market. I want to buy a new TV and am trying to work out which brand is most reliable but again it can be a mine field. Not sure if I want advice on TV where I should post on these boards.
I had a look in Currys at what they had on display but don't want to buy from them Amazon I buy from and always have had no problem with returns or faults etc but need pointing in the right direction.
oops This is far too long but would appreciate advice and some information especially about Laser printers. Read how they work etc but need to know if they meet my needs and if I can get something under say £100 or a little bit more if need be.
Finally I spent hrs on the phone to Epson one in talking me through trying to get the replacement working. Had it not been for the saynoto0870 the calls would have cost me 10p per minute. My telephone Broadband package give me free local national and international free so cost me nothing. Again much thanks to this this web site I was able to access a local no for Curry's also.
Many thanks to all and I look forward to receiving advice which I very much value

Too much information.need to know if they meet my needs
Please explain in a few words what you want to use the printer for.0 -
I use a Canon MP220 and replacement inks (to keep the costs down). I don't do photographs, like you don't, just general printing which requires colour sometimes. I looked at colour lasers, non of which did scanning and copying, but when I saw I would over time have to replace up to four or five toner cartridges at £50 per cartridge I decided to keep my Canon. For economy you could look at Kodak. Trouble is lots of printer manufacturers virtually give away the machine, relying on the replacement inks to get them profits. You only have to look at the cost of a printer against the cost of cartridges. I'd go with the inkjet with separate cartridges as I plan to do on my next renewal. Hope you find the right one. :cool:0

Thats one big brain fart.:rotfl:
Imagine you are on Tritter and try again. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
you can get all in one lasers, but they cost more, or you could use a separate scanner/old printer.
who do you need to print grocery lists, just save them as pdf instead
As with any printer, you need to check the cost and yield of toner/ink replacements, the main advantages are speed and no problems with dried up ink carts.!!

Laser, will save you a fortune in ink0

Hopefully that will help someone come up with a good suggestion.I need a new printer.
I want to be able to scan, including photos, copy and print.
It needs to be wifi
I am not a heavy user, I shop online and like to print the orders, I also print tickets for travel. I have not used the photo print option on my current printer.
Size is not too much of a problem.
Cost of ink is important, but it is the print head blockage [with inkjet printers] which is my main concern.
I would not want to buy from Curry's and my budget is as close to £100 as possible.
One thing you could add: could you be happy to have a black and white printer?
For what it's worth, I bought a £220 Epson black and white laser printer back in 2001. I have spent £70 once on a new toner cartridge for it since then, and it only now needs replacing. Good value for money for occasional printing IMO.
I would certainly also urge you to download cute pdf, and print receipts to .pdf file instead of paper - saving you money and clutter.0 -
Apology for the SPEIL! Thanks for the suggestions Basically I want a 3 in 1 printer which I can copy scan and print from As I have said I am not so concerned by the cost of the ink more by the fact that when the print head is blocked I have had bad experiences in clearing them,
I am happy to buy a printer which lasts me 3-4 years and then cut my loss and buy a new one. This is what happened with the first 2 printers. As said the printer can be cheap and the ink expensive but for me because I don't use the printer that much it is not a major problem.
I had not thought of saving the orders on line and this is a good suggestion for me. I do have bills phone electricity etc paperless My only problem is that I don't really seem able to put them into a folder so have to look through them all. If I want to save orders as a document can anyone tell me how I go about this so that I can easily find them. It is a great suggestion and one piece of advice that I am very happy to implement. Letters bills etc I store I have to go through everything until I find the one I am looking at. It would also save the reams of paper that I often mislay and when I need to look at the order it takes me forever to find.
Thanks again and apologies for the rant.

install cutepdf. file, print, save as pdf
Don't most supermarkets, give you a printout on delivery anyway?
save documents with a sensible name, eg gasbill-jan14.pdf and install www.voidtools.com, makes finding files simple
if you don't print much, inkjets dry up, you turn it on, and spend an hour cleaning heads, and then buying more cartridges, doesn't happen with lasers, they just work. For occasional use, don't see the point of wireless either, just attach it with usb when you need to print.
if you don't print photo's, black and white lasers are cheaper.!!
