I think he had you over here, they can fail just like any other component My employer operates over 100 disabled access vehicles, many of these have gas struts fitted, very rarely fail
However I don't know the consequences to yourself if the strut failed, so if you have peace of mind, money well spent0 -
If it says "supply and fit £48" they seem on shaky ground expecting a further £160 for fitting.
I would keep calm and ring them first so that if it is an error it can be corrected. If they insist on it but can't provide a reason then I would not pay them but be prepared to find another mechanic next time.0
