Hold on - isn't there legislation about things having to survive a reasonable amount of time? Off to research, but I'm sure there will be something in Martin's area of the site, IYSWIM.

I'm back. It's under the SAD FART rules (have a look in the shopping section of the site) and this thread seems basic but relevant https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1090847

As you can prove the fault is a common one, try a polite letter pointing this out and saying that (just over) 2 years is NOT a satisfactory lifespan for a TV!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Yep, I'd 'reasonably expect' a high spec decent brand TV like this to last more than 2 years, and I think you should take this up with the retailer.

Richer Sounds every time, excellent prices, they will price match, and you get a tenner off when you sign up for their news letter.

My TV broke down, they were there to pick it up within 24 hours, contractors loaned me a telly and it was back with me within 3 days.
Five year guarantee is sometimes free, but even when you pay for it, its only 10% of the purchase price.
    Would recommend them every time.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

There's a whole raft of consumer legislation but if the retailer / manufacturer doesn't want to play, which is often the case, it's pretty much up to you to enforce your rights and that for the most part means the hassle of a small claims court action.

Well you only need proof of purchase, so if you paid by card or cheque then the statement is your proof. The model number and serial sticker will be able to provide a manufacturing date so this at least proves how the telly is not how long you've had it but if it's less than 5 or 6 years you have more proof of how long it should last. Try also contacting Samsung directly to ask them what they are prepared to do, at the very least they might give you vouchers towards the cost of a new one.
My Mind wanders, if found please return.

I know its not much help but go for a Panasonic if you manage some sort of resolve
  • The first thing I thought about was the Sale of Goods Act / SADFART from the site but I was looking at it and wasnt 100% sure that it fitted, although I am aware that a branded TV should last longer than 2 years.
As my options are to try and speak nicely to Samsung and see what they say or suck it up to experience, I think I will write a nicely worded letter (much better than email) to Samsung and see where I get.

    Thank you everyone foryour help.

I searched on this board just now to see whether I should buy from Richer Sounds or John Lewis. Looks like either will price match I think I don't know anything about Richer Sounds other that reading about them on this web site I have looked at their web site and it sound promising. Equally I have never bought any product like this from John Lewis and again it is the 5 year guarantee which attracts me.
I am looking at a Samsung UE406500 at Richer Sounds £599 free delivery and free 5 year guarantee
John Lewis price is £649.95 for the same TV I spoke to them on the phone yesterday and they directed to a page on their web site where I fill in all the details and then they will come back to me with a decision. I have read reviews on this TV and they seem pretty good and it is a best buy from WHICH.
My dilemma is I think I will fill in the JL form and see what they have to say. I think that £599 is the best price out there Richer Sounds had it at £579 but when I went back it was £599.
The others I considered was Panasonic but then the actual TV I was looking at had some bad reviews There is a local Panasonic Shop here which I think is privately owned It had a 5 year manufacturers warrenty but should the shop go out of business as our local Sony one did then where would it leave me, I prefer the appearance of the Samsung .
    Appreciate advice

fromtheshires - you need to take this up with the RETAILER (the shop you bought it from) not the MANUFACTURER (Samsung) as I said in post #13.
  • Thought this information might be of some use to you.
John Lewis just price matched the samsung UE40F6500 at 564.95 with PRC Direct and the Samsung UE40F6740 at 599.99 with PowerDirect.co.uk for me. I am going for the UE40F6740 which apparently is the Which recommended TV in this range.
