Whats the best mobile credit card machine for a small business?

Options
Hi
We are looking at getting a credit card machine for our small business and are getting totally confused about it all! We have just read about the Paypal machine that you can buy for a one off payment of £99-00 but it is a charge of 2.75% on every transaction, is this the best deal? We are also members of the National Market Traders Association and the Federation of Small Businesses, but the monthly rental fees are very high, so just wanted to see what other people thought? We also trade outside at shows, so need it to be mobile.
Any advise would be great.
Thanks.

People here generally rate WorldPay Zinc

It's also 2.75% flat rate (although there are other tariffs available if you pay a monthly retainer) for credit and debit cards, and their 0330 (ie local landline price) helpdesk number is staffed with British people with the right information to solve your issues on the spot most times.

The handsets are £59.99 or discounts apply with a referral, PM if you want one from me, or there's a thread in the referrals section of this site.

I looked into this about a year ago. I run a property maintenance company and needed the ability to take CC / DC payments via my iPad. There were numerous options, most of which required a hefty up front payment, a monthly fee, plus a charge per transaction. Plus they wanted typically minimum 2 year contracts.

I ended up with Worldpay Zinc.

The App is very easy to use. It comes with a card reader that is blue toothed to the iPad. It sends a receipt to the customer via email or text.

I pay 65p for a DC transaction regardless of the amount and 3.3 % for CC transavtions. The money us in my bank within 3 working days. I get a bill each month and the charges come out of my account on 24th of each month.

I think it's now 2.75% across the board as paddyrg says. But this is still good value bearing in mind you don't have a monthly charge, so you only pay for what you use.. Also there is no minimum contract period.

I'm a member of the FSB and there deal is no where as good as the Worldpay Zinc.

I don't think you can fault Worldpay Zinc.

That is interesting to know. I do not feel comfortable walking round with lots of cash in my pockets and was looking for info on this. I was hoping to find something I can use via my mobile and not having to use another gadget.
  • The card readers are pretty small these days. PayPal do one which is probably the same size as the card readers the banks give you.
  • I'd second WorldPay Zinc too. No problems with it all, and a seamless transaction most times. It will pay for itself if you refer friends to the system too. Just ask me!

I use Adelante TaxiPay, where I just pay a flat rate of 6.5% per transaction, and use an app on my phone. They may have similar deals for market traders.

That does sound dear compared with Worldpay zinc TBH, that's a flat 2.75% and you use a combination of an app on the phone and a chip and pin card reader that connects via Bluetooth.

    That is seriously expensive.

I use Worldpay Zinc, but on an older contract. I pay 65p for debit card transactions and 3.3% for credit card transactions. Simple to use app on the ipad attached to a small hand held card reader machine. Money clears into my account in 3 working days.

Yes, it is expensive compared to others, though I hardly ever use it, and there's no minimum usage.

There is also the cost of the card reader to take into consideration, and it would take me a while to recoup the cost if I did get one.

iZettle is something that's come up on the forum several times, however I haven't tried it.

We use Worldpay as a business, but at the same time we're 99% online for these sales, with only one card reader in the office.
