Using Virgin mobile abroad

Recently been abroad,my fone failed to pick up a network,quick call to VM and all was sorted.
Except when I attempted to make a call,every number I tried returned a voice message 'stating this number is not valid'.
Text messages were fine,just the calls.
Contacted VM again who told me to put 44 before each number??surely a mobile number shouldn't require this,either way this didn't work either.
Any opinions?

It depends on your phone, how you have set it up and how you save the numbers on it.
If it's a smartphone and you have it registered with UK settings then you won't need +44.
If it's not set up as a UK phone, or isn't smart, then you would need to put the country code in front of the number so if the number is 07788 999999 then what you need to dial is +44 7788 999999, or instead if the + put in 00.

I don't know and am not sure (I think indeed it's not needed when roaming), but how a mobile number is different from a landline one?

Its a UK fone,done the reset and sim out business,no joy(nexus 4)


I'm back now,but want to prevent this in future.


I'll have to bend the ear of VM further.
