Oh Olde English Spangles they were a treat
and I remember foster clarkes soup cubes as well monna. I too remember drinking PLJ by the gallon and eating those awful Limmit biscuits that tasted like concrete. The things we put ourselves through to look glamourous. Those hideous 'roll-on girdles that made you 'glow as ladies do, and not sweat '
:):)
My favourite perfume when I couldn't afford my No5 was Lentheric's Tweed and my late ma-in-law bought me a huge gift set one year for Christmas bless her, and it lasted me for months and my eldest DD had the box when I finished with it as it looked like an old fashioned pirates chest.
The smell of 4711 lavender stick reminds me of my late Mum who would always rub it on your head if you were in bed with a temperature it was like a solid stick that she pushed a little up at a time.
Those pork chops with a bit of kidney in were gorgeous and my late OH loved them.
The smell of Mansion red floor polish reminds me of being a little girl and 'skating' around our lounge (best room only used on special occasions)with dusters tied to my feet as we had parquet flooring in there and a very old chinese rug in the middle and my Mum would let me polish the floor by sliding around on it. Usually got this treatment when her 'posh, rich, snooty sister' came to visit us from Glasgow for her annual inspection of my Mum and her family:):) Still she did always give each of us children a half a crown 2/6d before she went home This was always the first week in June and we had to save it until the summer holidays and spend it gradually over the summertime .My brother and I would sit for hours discussing what we could spend this fortune on. It seemed like a huge amount of money to us children as pocket money what there was of it was only pennies and they had to be worked and earned by doing chores
We soon learned the value of money in the late 1940s and were careful what we bought to get the best value for our cash.
One girl in my class at school was quite well provided for by her parents at Christmas and would have almost all the annuals Beano,Dandy, Topper, Radio Fun, Girls Crystal, School Friend and Girl and would rent them out for a penny a week in January after she had read them all. A canny lass I always wondered what became of her as she really didn't need the money but was very entrepreneurial when it came to making money (probably helps run the BOE now:):))
Great to hear some of your memories of things you valued and wish were back though, I'm really enjoying it.0 -
I've remembered something I definitely don't miss. Those terrible Energen rolls that were all air and the bits that weren't tasted like cardboard.
Ye gods, they were bloody awful!0 -
Oh I remember those dreadful Energen rolls too! And no I don't miss them either! I used to spread something called Outline on them. That seems to have disappeared too!
Another slimming aid I remember were some toffees Boots' sold called Aids (or was it spelled Ayds?) You were instructed to chew one slowly before a meal and they were supposed to fool you into eating a smaller portion. The trouble is they were rather nice and I'd end up eating the whole box in one go!"If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"0 -

Jackie, That reminds me of my own mum who always out a dab of her favourite Yardleys Lavender Water ((long gone) on my pillow when I was poorly as a kid. I still have a bottle of it which I found amongst my mum,s belongings when she died nearly ten years ago and use it very occasionally, eking it out preciously. I know you can get other versions of Lavender water but somehow their fragrance isn't quite the same.0 -

Ayds... before dinner sweeties.
Alpine fizzy pop. The pineapple was my favourite. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I've got Dairymaid Icecream ringing bells in my head, but can't remember when it was. I do remember my grandma nipping out to the shop for a 'block' and of course you had to eat the lot or lose the leftovers.
Can't even recall when the parents bought their first freezer. But I do remember it was Very Serious Business and required special books with lists of blanching times as it mostly required freezing from fresh. None of this supermarket stuff as the supermarkets hadn't quite reached us then!
But I was grateful when the supermarket did arrive as before that Saturdays were shopping days and I got sent to the village butcher/baker/greengrocer/chemist/ironmonger with loads of little lists as my Saturday morning job. But when Asda arrived, my ma used to get out her old MG and nip off mid-week, leaving me free on Saturdays to polish the brass on the front door instead...:D“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
Oh I miss several things from many moons ago.
Cheese Whizz a processed cheese spread which was addictive - still available in USA but £20 postage for one jar.
Crispo Crackers! a bit like quavers but you cooked them at home and they were delicious.
Energen cheese crispbreads - lush with cheese spread on top!
All the above cheese based - my favourite food.
Then there's blackcurrant Spangles and Pyramint.0 -

Ah now, if we're going with things we definitely don't want to see again..... Izal loo paper. In a rectangular box, with interleaved sheets. Nearly scratched your backside into Wednesday week, if you weren't careful! It was the only sort of loo paper my mother ever bought.
Oh yes, Izal.
Fortunately I only ever came across it in the public lavs. Definitely to be avoided where possible.
Brentford Nylons - those horrid nylon sheets and pillowcases, another thing I do not miss!
But leaping forward a few decades, what happened to Body Mousse? It came out like shaving foam and was absorbed instantly into the skin. Much better than sticky body lotion. 1980s I think it was.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
I miss Spira chocolate bars and Cadbury's chocolate that doesn't taste like plastic.
My absolute favourite chocolate as a child was kinder schokobons. I was given a large plastic egg full of them one year for Easter when I was little and spent years figuring out what they were and tracking them down!
Same applies to a particular type of waffle I had in Florida when I was 5 years old but I have yet to find a waffle anywhere that tastes as good as the one I had at a breakfast diner on a Rodeo Drive lol.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A. TappingI'm finding my way back to sanity again... but I don't really know what I'm gonna do when I get there~ LifehouseWhat’s fur ye will make go by ye… but also what’s not fur ye, ye can jist scroll on by!0
