In the early 50's I had an aunt and uncle who emigrated to the USA. They used to send us presents of foodstuff only available there as a treat. The thing I looked forward to most receiving was Cheez Whizz - a cheese spread in a jar made, I think, by Kraft. It had a multitude of uses - sandwich filling, spread on toast and browned under the grill, thinned down as cheese sauce etc. I can almost taste it now! It never did make it's way over here much to my dismay!
I haven't read to the end of this thread yet but, before I forget (!), I think that Cheez Whiz reached the UK in the very late '50s or early '60s. I remember having something with that name and that it was soft cheese from a jar spread on bread (already toasted on one side) and then toasted.0 -
I did find a substitute for mint cracknell when I was trying to find the name, peppermint crisp. Think it said it was available in Australia and South Africa, but there are some on Amazon, not cheap though.

An honourable mention has to go to my Pippa doll. I'm far too old to miss that kind of thing, but Pippa was still better than Barbie or Sindy any day of the week
Cherryb is still available, Iceland do it. Not sure if it's just a Christmas line though. Wouldn't recommend it though
I still have my Pippa doll. And her original dress. Seen the prices on ebay but I'm gonna keep her.

Avon cream perfumes (from the late ‘60s/early 70s) – Rapture (purple packaging) and Occur! (jar had a “diamond” for the dot of the exclamation mark). A couple of years ago I thought I had found Rapture in an Avon product but using a different name. However Avon told me it was not the same.my aunt wore 'Tweed' and I loved it - until the shop I worked in sold it - and all those customers spraying the testers all day really put me off it! I cant smell it now without feeling sick!
my nans 'signature' perfume was 'midnight in paris'. very unlike her as it was a very sophisticated (or thought of as such) perfume. I found a bottle in her drawer when we cleared out the house after my aunt died. I opened it and wished I hadn't! smells bluddy awful - really cheap and nasty!candlelight_2013 wrote: »Eric's Mum - Billy Cotton's Band show I think.

Just remembered the Pretty Peach range from Avon. It was in a peach coloured bottle with a little peach on the top and a leaf. Used to get some in my christmas stocking.0

It had probably been opened years before and was just too old. Chanel no 5 would be awful too.
no it hadn't been opened - but it WAS years old!
aunt used to be an avon rep - she had that 'case' and took round 'samples'.
Occur! - now that was a strong perfume for avon! but very popular - aunt sold loads of that!
pretty peach - yeauuchh - can remember getting that for Christmas and it wasn't pretty and didn't smell of peaches!
they sold a childrens perfume before that which was very light and smelled a bit like violets. and I cant remember what its called.0 -
I used to get the Bunty for girls comic and the annual for Christmas . I still have the charm bracelet that was free one week and then you got a charm each week . Used to love Petticoat magazine when I was a teenager , tho I don't think we were called teenagers then ! Mam used to use Omo washing powder but I've only seen it in US now . Dial soap was nice too. I liked Avon Topaz and Wishing perfumes . Used to love Aqua Manda . I wish Elizabeth Arden still made Memoire Cherie as I wore it for our first ever date and our wedding day . It's been lovely to read this thread . So many of us have happy memories of not having much but appreciating what we did have .0

I also miss Ice Cream flavour Chewits, sugar mice, toffos (not normally a toffee fan funnily enough). Just made the bf's day by informing him nerds are still available in some shops as american imports lolOn the up

anyone remember a product called (I think) Virol? it came in a little jar not unlike the marmite jar and mum used to make me have a spoonful every day. it was for convalescents and supposed to help 'build you up'. I grew to love the taste of it! and it was quite expensive I think - I can remember asking mum to buy more for me when the jar was finished her refusing, saying I didn't need it!
I was convalescent because I spent my second two years in hospital with TB. I came out just after my fourth birthday. Life got weird after that. all I knew was hospital, and outside life was like suddenly landing on a new planet! I knew mum and dad as those people who came and sat at my bedside every evening! nan and granch and my aunties were complete strangers to me. (they weren't allowed to visit). I missed MY nurses and MY doctors. especially one young doc who used to come and play and sing to me a couple of times a day. I can still see his face in my mind, but his name escapes me, if I ever knew it - I just used to call him 'my doc'! I even missed the food! mum had terrible trouble getting me to eat!
Yet, I learned to read in hospital - I could read quite well by the age of three - as the 'class' was right there in the ward and the teacher was so grateful for pupils, she didn't care how old you were! most of the kids allowed out of bed 'disappeared' at lesson time! I had excellent tuition, lol!
The nurses worked their socks off! never mind that there were 'ward maids' if a nurse was told to clean the floor she cleaned the floor! They fed the patients - spoon fed most as I remember, and they were expected to wash and freshen up every child before shift change in the morning- and it was a big ward! at least 25 to 30 under 5s! and you could guarantee a few wet beds every morning! they were expected to comfort and nurse the little ones and play with the older ones - as well as perform their medical duties.
Then I went home to be an only child and sleeping in parents room for the next four years til aunt married - then I got my own room! and a baby brother!
Virol!
I envy you, meri! I coveted it, as m friend and next door neighbour was fed it , but my crabby mother just gave us cod liver oil!Member #14 of SKI-ers club
