    Set up a gmail account.

Install Mozilla Thunderbird email client on your computer.

Disable gmail's built in spam filter so that you receive all your emails without gmail arbitrarily deciding which is spam and which isn't, and often making the wrong decision.

Set up an email whitelist in Thunderbird so that any addresses not on your whitelist will automatically go straight to the Junk folder.

Geronimo, no more spam or adverts - ever!

I'm not with them, but GMX are supposed to be good ( http://www.gmx.co.uk/ ).

I'm with GMX and they are great -- all the features you need and good reliability. Much better than any other provider I've used (although I'm not wild about the web interface).

I have a Yahoo account that I've had for years now and I use it solely for signing up for stuff - this forum for example - buying stuff and so on. For more important stuff and family use I have my own domain registered through a company that provides unlimited email adresses, webspace and several other useful features and through that I have a very personalised email address.

The Yahoo address gets tons of spam, but Yahoo's own filters and MS Outlook's deal with the vast majority of it and that way my main address doesn't get affected by spam.

I've found Gmail's spam filter consistently good, to the extent that I rarely even bother checking my spam folder now. I'd say that it's in excess of 99.5% effective-maybe 1 email in 200 is wrongly categorised.

    +1

Gmail's Social and Promotion folders separate all the commercial emails out of your inbox very well ime

Don't you think you ought to explain yourself?. Fancy responding in such a negative way. Anyone coming here to actually learn something would find your comment a waste of space.

Tronator's point is that you will then only receive email from addresses in your address book-fairly limiting!
Why create a manual whitelist when spam filters can do the job very well?

I thought my reply together with the part I quoted was explanation enough. Everyone who's able to think one step further than Gillor understands that his "system" is flawed. His spam folder will be full of false positives.

Only one example: You want to create an account in some forum and the forum software sends an email with the activation link. Where do you think this email will end up?

If you mean am I being flippant, the answer is no.

Am I serious when I say whitelisting prevents all spam reaching your inbox, then yes.

    Obviously not.

And, by implication, everyone else is an idiot? What condescending tosh!

All systems are flawed, but never mind how to set up a whitelist, how it works in practice, the fors and againsts and any other form of objective discussion - Tronator has spoken so that's that. End of discussion.
