surely if you fill up just that little bit more each time then over time you'll save a trip to petrol station which in turn will save you fuel?

I fill up as much as i can, thats just because the petrol station is always busy and the price has usualy increased by c2p the next time I fill up!

I take MSE re-fuelling to the extreme!
I usually use Esso fuel, or failing that then shell (whichever's cheapest, usually it's Esso). Esso give one clubcard point per £3, while Shell give one point per litre.

To maximise my points haul, I will fill up to the first click, then fill up until I hit the next milestone to get the extra point.
For example, if my tank at Esso has cost me £53.45, I'll fill up to £54 so I get the full 18 points rather than 17 points. In the rare instances that its not practical to do this (for example, if it clicks at £54.05 - I won't put in an extra £2.95) I'll fill it up to the nearest round number.

I know it probably makes very little difference, but hey! This is MSE after all!
    Every little helps!

But what about the extra fuel used to drive the extra weight around? ;) Plus that argument would only really work if you completely emptied the fuel tank every time before refueling, which of course nobody does.

Not strictly related but on seat ibizas theres a secret button near the filler cap which can be pressed to add a few more litres of fuel. This fills up the breather apparently.

Never done this as i'd be worried about spillage but i guess it works for some on long motorway drives.

    No Clicks

because I put a set amount of litres in due to doing the same journeys each week and knowing my car's average mpg. Plus the petrol station is on my route anyway (infact there is a choice of quite a few). Guess the rule is that more fuel = less fillups = better mpg, but if the petrol station is on your route anyway does it really matter?

I pass several on my route to work. Riding a bike, I tend to need to fill up more often de to the smaller tank size so I either try to time it to days when the local Esso is doing their 2p a litre off or I'll check out the prices on the way in during the morning and make a metal note where to stop on the way home if I'm getting low.

Sadly I've been caught out before though. The price went up 2p during the day and the bike had hit reserve so I had no choice but to pull in.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

First click for me. For people who fill to second, third etc click, what is the reason? Just wanting slightly more fuel in the tank of is there some reason it should give a more repeatable fill level?
I calculate brim to brim across every tank (just reset the trip and note the km's travelled on the receipt each fill up - takes a moment).

The second 'click' lets the fuel in the tank settle and then you fill until the fuel is actually in the filler neck - I think it gives more consistent results.

I also combine money off vouchers at 15-20c off a litre, and buying fuel on the cheapest day of the week (Fuel fluctuates $1.39-$1.60 throughout the week!) so it helps if I can get as much cheap fuel in the tank as possible. Plus I only get 16-18 mpg, so a few litres worth of extra range really help!

Why do some pumps click off all the time when the tank is no where near full? Both myself and other half fill the car at 1/4 tank or when the light comes on, and some pumps are very reluctant to fill and keep clicking off throughout the process. Other pumps are fine.

One car petrol other diesel. Filled mine tonight and had to keep the lever lightly pressed and even then it cut out 4-5 times taking £36 of petrol.

I fill up as much as I can to save time. After the first click my tank will still take another 6 to 7 litres, I fill up twice a week as it is, if I didnt try and squeeze more in, how many extra trips would that be over a year?
