A) You never put more fuel in than past one click !
B) But two clicks gives me more fuel !
A) two clicks overfills your tank !
B) but if it was overfilled would it not spill out ?

Once I get to one click thats good enough for me. No need to give the robbing petrol company even more money is there?

Three at least, but then I am greedy.

Seriously, if I am brimming the tank to do a mileage check, I let it click precisely three times. That's because when the fuel is filling, it's sloshing about a lot and it's pretty random when it clicks off. But if you pause and then do another click or two a) you get quite a lot more in, half a litre or so, and b) it's in the filler neck by then and any measuring error is less.

BTW, I haven't lost a drop by doing it that way, so it's not overfilling it.

    Two clicks:
    Fill to first click.
    Count to fifteen.
    Re-fill to second click.
  • I always filled to brim until recently when a service station technician told me fuel companies love people who do this. Apparently after the first click you are likely to be putting as much air as fuel into your tank which costs you money. Never done it since.

Um, the pump measures the amount of liquid, it doesn't measure air. I think the service station guy was winding you up!
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

No clicks? When the pump clicks fuel is being pushed back up the spout. Thats what triggers the cutoff.

I find it amusing to see drivers trying to get the last teaspoonful of fuel into the tank. Even funnier when its dripping on the floor or running down the sides of the car.

Not funny for bikes though when in every direction from the fuel station has a layer of diesel for a 100 yards.

You tend not to see it from cars but it is more of an issue coating your tyres with the stuff that has been spilt on the forecourt as people try to get too much in and end up spilling it.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

No, it uses a venturi effect to sense when the tip of the nozzle is submerged in fuel. There's a smaller tube in the nozzle that connects to a diaphragm, there is no way for the pump to pump 'circularly' as you suggest. Fuel just spills out because the pump delivers faster than it can stop if you insist on going for the forth click.

First click for me. For people who fill to second, third etc click, what is the reason? Just wanting slightly more fuel in the tank of is there some reason it should give a more repeatable fill level?

Fuel pumps are very carefully checked to ensure that the amount of fuel the customer is paying for is delivered into the tank. They won't be supplying air and charging for it, you have to go to another part of the forecourt to do that.
