It seems such a mine field with different coops i dont want to make a big mistake:eek:. Also any good tips where to buy chickens in the devon somerset area think we will go for young ones rather that re homing ex bat. Any pointers would be fab

Try local paper, or Friday-ad.co.uk, or poultryads.co.uk (haven't used this one but have looked at the site quite a lot).

    Hello chicken lovers.
The RSPCA are running a "Quash the Squash" campaign, explaining how the welfare of meat chickens in England is under threat as the government considers new EU legislation. Since Over 6,000 people have written to the minister for animal welfare, Jim Fitzpatrick MP, urging him to ‘quash the squash’ and reject this backward step for chicken welfare.

They are asking for more people to e-mail him to ensure the government makes the right choice for chickens. Even at current minimum standards, so many chickens are crowded into a shed that each bird has less space than a sheet of A4. It's hard to walk or even flap their wings. But this legislation could allow yet more birds to be squashed in.

The RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming and WSPA are all campaigning on this issue to prevent a backward step for chicken welfare in England. You can add your voice by completing or changing the template letter at :

Sadly I don't keep chickens myself, but I've certainly signed up to this one and hope others of you who keep chickens who have a much happier life, will feel you can too.
  • Only 6 out of the 12 hatched, (one late with help, hope it's OK) methinks something wasn't ideal for them (maybe holes in the floor didn't help) as the chicken man gets a good hatch rate. So I now have 2 lemon millefleur and 1 gold millefleur Sablepoot, and 1 lavender, 1 lemon cuckoo and 1 red Pekin. Neither of the partridge Pekins hatched, but I nearly got one of each as there were two eggs of each type under her. Bit surprised by the bias towards the sablepoots 3/4, as opposed to 3/8 for the Pekins.

  • we have a broody chicken

i have read lots of info online and also looked through this thread, but still have a couple of questions if i may.

I move her out of the box in the mornings, into the garden and close the house off so she cant go back in (but then obviously neither can any of the others) - i am still getting an egg from each of the other two daily at the mo.

She is quite happy and is running around and eating within the garden, but as soon as i reopen the house at the end of the day she is straight back into the same position.

    My question is

a - am i doing the right thing
b - how long will this last - currently starting the fourth week
  • We've now had our 3 chickens for just over 2 weeks (and were told they are about 20 weeks old at the time) ... We've still not had a single egg from any of them (and they have all settled in very well and they are very much enjoying the freedom!)

I know I'm just being impatient but I hope we get some soon!
