good morning guys ,,just a question ,, my old hen has I think something stuck in her crop as she keeps stretching and bending it ,,anyone know what i can do???

    Hi Kaat,

Is your hen having trouble breathing and swallowing?

My hens have suffered previously with sour crop which is where they have stored too much food in the crop and it has not digested properly so it goes mouldy in the crop.
You are supposed to syringe water into their mouth and then hold them upside down and loads of brown gunk will come out and this is then clearing the crop.

This does work but one of my hens died the other week because of it and now we think she had a different crop problem (can't think of the name) where the crop gets twisted so no food can go down. We kept rinsing her out and she was fine until she ate again and it just didn't seem to go anywhere, she lost all her weight in 2 days and then she passed away.

well i don't have anything major to add to this thread except. finally i'm going to be the owner of some chickens in the near future.

I've wanted chickens for year's. prob 8 years since i met my hubby and his mum has some. anyway he has always said no. end of . not discussing it as it is a no. But for some reason he has mellowed on the subject and while i just happened to slip it in to conversation couple weeks back . he said that next year we could get some.

i'm mega chuffed. we won't get many and i not sure what part of year were get any. but i want to rescue the ex battery chicken. so i am gonna drop a line to our local lady on the iow who deals with them and see what advice she can give me and when she is liekly to have more to be rehomed and get my name on list.

    Exciting stuff.

We've used a dose of olive oil - though I suppose you can use any edible oil - to help with this. We use a dropper to get it into the bird. It's a two-person job!

thanks Mojisola ,,we have given the chicken a few maggots  hoping that it is impacted crop and she does look a bit better, :D ,we coated the maggots in live yoghurt and do two things at once ;) ,,and then gave the extra maggots to the others ,,they enjoyed them:rotfl::rotfl: fingers crossed

  • We have our first egg this morning!!!!! :D

It wasn't laid in the nest box and we've no idea which one laid it... but it's already been used to make our Scotch pancakes this morning :Dd

  • My chooks are only about 2 years old and have been moulting for ages now.
They have not laid for over 6 weeks and I just wondered if and when they will lay again.
They seem happy and are eating well and their combs are red.
I have put a tonic in their water too.
    They are totally free range.
Is it normal for them to stop laying at this time of year?
They are just the brown hybrids - nothing fancy.

  • Kitty it's totally normal, mine stopped laying around Hallowe'en and didn't start again until March last year :O Once they're through the moult they should start laying again but I'd take the opportunity now while they're not laying to worm them and frontline them so you don't have to worry about egg withdrawal periods :)
