  • Oooh, exciting news - I'm getting six new ladies tomorrow from a family who can't keep them anymore. We have four already so this will take us up to ten and it means I need to consider 6 more names - all flower and colour related. We have (bracket colour is leg ring):
    • Rosemary (pink),
    • Daisy (white),
    • Hyacinth (baby blue),
    • Violet (purple).
    I'm thinking
    • Iris (Dark Blue),
    • Marigold (Orange),
    • Peony (red),
    • Holly (dark Green),
    • Hydraenga (Light Green),
    • Daffodil (Yellow).
How exciting :T Just have to figure out how to tell MrS now :rotfl:Not sure quite what his reaction will be but I'm sure it'll be fine!
  • Lucky you Sunflower.:T

Hope the intros go ok. That's what is really putting me off having any new girls.

    hi everyone

I've got 6 girls and 2 boys - the boys are 6 months old now, and completely gorgeous (one French Maran Black, and one French Maran Blue). However... and you'll guess what's coming... they are beginning to fight, and the time has come to send them off to new homes. Where's the best place to advertise? I'm very happy to give them away to the right home. Any ideas? They are used to dogs, and children, and will come when called :)

It's tricky finding homes for boys. We've still got 5 araucana boys here. Luckily, as they're in a different area to our girls, they don't fight too much, but they do like to have crowing contests!

You could try poultry forums, BirdTrader, Gumtree, PreLoved and Freecycle. Somebody might want a fresh bloodline for their breeding flocks.

My black rock went broody again and after the trauma of last time I decided to leave well alone - I encouaged her to get off the nest each day for food and drink but otherwise left her to it - after 6 weeks she is back! Still not laying but has been of the nest for 3 days now - so relieved!

Onestep, just wanted to add a word of caution - please be careful when assessing their new owner as some people take advertised boys for cockfighting. If they are genuine poultry people you will know from the way they talk, but if you have a gut feeling that something is wrong you should go with it.
Oh dear, here we go again.

I've just been through 6 weeks of it with my Speckledy and it's so lovely to see her scratching around (well blown around today!) with the others! She hasn't started laying again yet though.

Happy new year everyone, I hope all of your chooks are enjoying the wind as much as mine are :rotfl::rotfl:

I'm not sure if this has been posted before, but I wondered if it would be of interest to anyone. It is a book on offer from Allotment Vegetable Growing website called Backgarden Chickens & Other Poultry - by John & Cara Harrison. It looks like an interesting read.

The cost is £4.99 + £1 P&P (UK) but you also get a £10.00 off voucher code you can use against the cost of a chicken coop from chicken coops direct, who also currently have a 30% off sale.

I hope it is of use to someone. :)

ETA, the book has 5 star reviews on Amazon and the cost there if £4.86 plus the option of free delivery for those who don't want the voucher.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D
