Thanks for that QueenieB, didn't know that. Its around 10 years since we kept chickens, and I know the regulations for goat keeping were stepping up at that time, so I guess its the same for chucks. Does kitchen waste include outer leaves of cabbages etc fed raw? or just any processed waste? I do think you have to be really careful not to include any meat of any kind - we always kept our mash vegan. Shall have to give this some thought

I think the regs say that anything which has passed through your kitchen counts as kitchen waste, but in practical terms you'd need to concentrate on cooked food. I still cook up a mask of spuds and oatmeal in the winter for my hens, but I keep a slow cooker in the shed for the purpose and neither of the ingredients ever goes through the kitchen.

  • My little skyline is in trouble. Closre to death I think.
    Pasted from slightly earlier appeal.

I'm flummoxed and desperate to keep her alive right now.

She's been a bit listless and keeping to herself the last 6 days but still laying an egg a day which I tend to use as an indication of where they're at health and contentment wise but I've been worried. All 4 girls have lived happily together with the usual squabbles for the last 4 years and have a pretty palatial space outside and in all ways.
I went to lock their inner run tonight and check as usual and she was lying on the floor barlely moving not on the perch with the other 3. Horrible.
I've brought her in. Can't find any signs of injury or attack, ticks, fleas, mites but she is barely alive. Not responding much at all or standing. She's got a bit of feather loss but nothing major at all. I've brought her in to the kitchen and given her some cuddling and TLC, bedded her down in a box and she did have a bit of a peck at some mixed corn grain I put in but didn't drink. She's probably the last in the pecking order but not ostracised by the others or anything. Can anybody help?

Have you checked her crop? Is there a sour smell?

If you have some natural yoghurt or some apple cider vinegar, try and get some of that down her.

Any help? I'm not going to sleep tonight. She's not just an egg factory.
I'll be gutted if she dies and I didn't do all possible to save her.

No. didn't seem to be but something trickled onto my wrist from her head/neck area as I was holding her earlier? Kind of slightly green clear?
Doesn't seem to be any smell. I have no cider vin but may have some yoghurt ( bio). Going to check.

Hmm...not sure what to suggest. I did wonder about an impacted crop and this page came up in a search.
