Anybody stayed in Charmouth?

I'm thinking about a week in Charmouth, Dorset over Easter. I stayed in a hotel in Lyme Regis as a teenager and have fond memories. Charmouth seems to be just round the coast, but from a google image search I can only see pictures of the beach (which looks lovely). Is the town/village equally picturesque?

It looks quite picturesque. Google it and select the maps option, then satellite view and use the Street view.
  • It's much smaller than Lyme Regis, more of a village than a town. Lovely for a really peaceful holiday, but not a lot to do unless you are a walker.

Personally I would try to stay in Lyme Regis, now a bit of a foodie paradise!

I'm now angling towards Weymouth. I want to stay in a cottage rather than a hotel and there don't seem to be any rental cottages in Lyme. I've found a nice looking one in Weymouth for only £600. Will post a link tomorrow.

    Have booked this one:

    Looking forward to it...
  • I see you've booked now but just wanted to say that Charmouth is tiny! We holidayed there most years when i was in my teens as my dad knew someone with a holiday home there and I have great memories.

The village main street has one shop, one post office, one pub and a chip shop. Sometimes there's a cafe and that's it!

Beach is great for fossil hunting though and there's a fossil shop and cafe on the beach.

I see you've now booked one in Weymouth, but for future reference, there are loads of rental cottages in Lyme Regis - I'm not sure how you have come to the conclusion there are none !

The main problem is if you want parking, as it is an old town with steep narrow roads and many of the rentals do not have parking, although there are some council car parks in the town.

We have successfully used this company in the past, which is based in Lyme Regis, and has pages of properties both in Lyme Regis itself and also elsewhere in Dorset.

I went to charmouth a few years ago, stayed at newlands caravan park
not real big shops, was ok we went fossiling most days which suited me
went to Weymouth and lyme regis
got to say driving anywhere in dorset just takes forever
we go to west bay visiting friends sometimes god it takes so long to get there from M5
  • I stayed in Charmouth a couple of years ago. It's a single street with about 10 shops and 2 pubs. Plus a fairly small beach and tiny fossil museum. You could see everything there in about 20 minutes. To be honest, for a week you might want to stay somewhere larger like Bridport or Lyme unless you really want to go to the beach all day. There really isn't anything if it rains
  • I lived near Weymouth for 5 years and regularly visited Charmouth. It is v small! Weymouth is a good central spot on the Jurassic Coast for getting to most places within an hour between Lyme Regis and Swanage.
Have a lovely holiday - there's more than enough to do to fill 2 weeks, let alone one!
Personal favourites are Corfe Castle/ Poole Harbour, Tyneham (if the ranges are open), Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, Charmouth and Lyme Regis.

Ah well, I guess I was looking at the wrong websites. Anyway, I think that Weymouth will be a good base, and I've never been there which is a plus. I do intend to head over to Lyme at some point though...

As for parking - I've stayed in Polperro a number of times now, and there you have to park about half-a-mile from the cottage regardless of where you stay...
