Considering both use the same last leg route you'd have been better off keeping VM cable in the equation.

...To have both Infinity and ADSL2+ ,Pincher must have two independent phone lines with two line rentals to pay:eek:

It will be two lines but both from the same cabinet in same cable bundle and same pole if there is one so one drunk driver or myoptic road digger operator would take both out in a single accident. They may well both be on the same fibre running from the exchange too which is another point of failure. If you are going to splash the cash with a backup for home broadband it's better to use a technology mix - phone line - cable - 3G - satellite are all possibilities.

Most apt. In fact that junction has idiots rushing out of the side road a lot, and crashes occur about once a month. Luckily, the crashes invariably end up destroying the garden wall in the south west corner, diagonally opposite the BT cabinet, which has been accident free for 13 years that I know of.

Ideally, I would have Virgin Media cable and BT Infinity, but I'm taking a break from Virgin, so I can sign back on as a new customer, so I can take advantage of cashback deals. Try out Tivo next time. The Plusnet is on a £2.75 + line rental deal.

Lovely idea in theory, but when it's a struggle to put food on the table and heat the house at the end of the month it's a bit harder in practice!

The justification is how much you lose if you didn't have a backup.

Missed deadline, work NOT undertaken: how much did you lose?

If my livelihood depended on a home internet connection I'd make sure I had a backup too.

In my case I've retired so although I do maintain a couple of websites and have live data feeds to one of them the income that provides doesn't even cover the costs so I settle for just the one FTTC connection.

Believe it or not, I still have a Pay As You Go dial-up account that works. Connects at 40kbps roughly. OK for text e-mail. Plan C. Plan D would be to learn Morse Code.

You do need to have an museum piece computer with a dial-up modem, of course.

...surprisingly some laptops being sold 3 or 4 years ago still had 56K dial up modems in,so hardly museum pieces (I'm still using mine, albeit wirelessly to ADSL2+)

...And don't forget plan E -LEARN SEMAPHORE :rotfl:

True! As I'm getting more work recently and after this it's definitely something I'll be looking into. Even if it just means changing my mobile network from GiffGaff to somebody that allows tethering
