Really kind of you Simon. Will do. My problem isnt nearly as bad as your friends, thank goodness.

Update on the Recuva though. Started it again in the deep scan mode. It stopped again after a few mins at the 350k but I left it to it, nothing happened for about 45 minutes, then I cant say it "sprung into life" but has been limping on since then and has 3 days left now. So I will see what results are forthcoming.

Despite what looked like very bad news on the red/orange/green signalling the deepscan seems to have recovered a huge amount. My problems now seem entirely different. I have for example 24 copies of 1 jpeg I just looked at. I am having trouble with the size of files I need to copy, 32mb flash drive isnt coping.

I would now value ideas for software to root out the duplicates when I return it to the computer..

Thank you to everyone for their help so far.

Ive scanned this thread and if I read it correctly you are now seeing recoverable files but are trying to recover them a few at a time to a 32Mb memory stick/card? It sounds like its going to be a rather slow process.

If your backup disk is knackered from the Christmas drop then now might be a good time to get a new one.

Here is a link to a 500Gb one on Amazon which I include as its quite cheap - (double the size is only £10 extra though)

I would think that the recovery software would simply 'recover' everything in one sweep to the external hard disk and then you can take that external hard disk to any other machine and see whats on there.

    hope this helps

Yes, thanks Ant555, I have ordered one.

Too little space on 32gb when so many things are duplicated. Very few files do seem recoverable now but I am copying all in the hope that I am wrong.

I was thinking of using digital volcano to try and sort the photo duplications unless anyone else knows anything better, but what about text files?

    Hi Wortle,

I haven't re-read the messages but where is the dodgy hard disk right now? Has it been moved to another PC or are you running the recovery software on the problem PC itself in situ?

If its the latter then i'm slightly nervous for you.

Would you, or someone you know, have the ability (or inclination) to download a 'boot cd' on another PC or lap top from a link I could give you and then use it on your suspect PC?

Let me know what you think.

Hi, it is the latter, but I am using a portable version of recuva.
I only have limited access to a good lap top and that disappears at 2pm today, until Friday.

I am prepared to give most things a go, although the initial suggestion of unpicking my lap top was put on hold until utter desperation sets in, I dont understand why you think I need a boot cd, but if there is some web based info you can point me to in order to educate myself I would be grateful. Perhaps I could look at the link too and get prepared for next weekend. Thanks for taking the time to help me.
  • Did you select just the 'Non-Deleted' files option before running Recuva?

If not, any current (ie Non-Deleted) files on the drive may not show up in the scan results.
