Orange debt help !

Hi I am posting on behalf of a friend who is looking for some advice, he came to me hoping I could help but I am unsure of the answer.
He has a lot of trouble with his ex - won't go into detail but the main problem is he took out a phone contract in his name for her, and trusted her to pay this - she has not done this. (He also now knows he is stupid for doing this too!)
So he went to an orange store last week and took out a new contract for himself, a week later he has been cut off and they are asking for the outstanding balance of £214, which is for the previous phone contract mentioned above.
The question is - can they cut his current contract off due to an existing debt on another contract ? We were both under he impression that this wouldn't happen but it has - I don't think they should be able to do this but then I am unsure whether this is the case or not
Any help would be appreciated !

I'm quite surprised they let him have another contract if he owed money on a previous one.
As he owes them money they are not going to want him to build up any more debt which they may never get back, because, as far as Orange are concerned, he is a non payer.
Is the contract he took out for his ex out of the minimum term now? If so I'd advise him to cancel it as soon as possible. If it's not, it may still be in his best interests to cancel it and pay any early termination fee required, so as not to allow any call costs to mount up.0 -
That's how it works I'm afraid as they are both in his name the risk is against him rather than each contractIt's not just about the money0

Tell him to pay the debt and cancel the other contract asap0

This is not very smart advice. He need to check if first contract period (24 months I presume) already runs out - otherwise he will pay early cancellation fee.
If yes - he can cancel it.
If not - I would suggest to contact Orange and ask for a SIM card replacement so his gilfriend will not make any more costs above monthly rate (which need to be paid till the end of the contract)
Obviously he need to pay the debt. And start looking for a new girlfriend.0 -
As the others have said, yes they can, and do. I know, I used to be one of the people there whose job it was to do just that.
The block on the new acc will stay until the outstanding balance on the old one is cleared.0
