Should I leave job?

Hi

I wondered if anyone can offer any advice, I recently went for an interview in a pharmacy as a sales assistant, I was offered the job and started a few days ago. The problem is after 2 afternoons and 1 full day of training I am expected to know so much and at the end of the week I will be working alone in the pharmacy with only the pharmacist who I will be unable to ask her for any guidance, apart from the medicines as she doesn't deal with anything else.I will have to deal with deliveries, invoices, banking, stock, as well as putting it all on the computer system and logging all prescriptions, as well as a multitude of other things. I know it may not sound like a lot, but I was expecting to be working alongside somebody else; but this isn't the case and I know I won't be able to deal with the banking; I have been shown it twice and it seems like a complicated system. Can anyone offer any advice please.

Find another job, I guess. I have said I need more training, but basically its tough and I have to deal with it. Its only the pharmacist and another lady running it, the lady who has been training me will not be there anymore whilst I am there in future. I am just very worried I won't be able to cope and don't know what to do about the situation.
  • I'd speak to your manager and discuss your concerns with them to see if there is some support available to help you - for complicated tasks there might be written procedures that explain what you need to do that you could follow, or if they know you haven't picked it all up right away they might give you a bit more time/guidance to help you learn and become more confident before dropping you in the deep end. If you don't tell them your worries they won't know you are struggling and may assume that you're picking it all up.

I have already told the lady training me I haven't picked everything up, there is literally so much to the job description that I wasn't expecting. Today I was handed a pack saying congratulations on your pathway to being a pharmacy assistant, when quite simply the job description did not say this either. The pharmacist will not listen to me, all she seems to do is shout at everyone and cry out the back, it doesn't help because there is a communication barrier, she is Polish and doesn't speak clear english.

    you'll learn fast.

go with the flow, make notes and learn on the job. If in say 4-6 weeks you're still struggling then do something about it but for now keep getting paid

It does sound like you have been chucked in the deep end a little but I certainly would not leave unless you have another job to go to. Make some notes when they show you how to do things if you can and do let them know you are a little worried about certain procedures.

Then work on making her a friend, buy her a drink or something tomorrow.

Get your head down and do the best you can. You will always have to learn new skills and quite often be "thrown in a the deep end" when you start a new job. You need to work hard to learn how to cope otherwise no one would progress.
  • Did you try to speak to the manager (not the person training you)?
Explain that there is a lot to learn and that if you cannot get more training you will have to give your notice (if you can afford to look for another job of course). They really should not expect you to know everything in one week !
