Rejected due to no credit history - what next?

in Credit cards
I applied for my 1st credit card (the santander 123 credit card) as I just opened a 123 current account. Unfortunately, I was rejected - my credit score is excellent, but I suspect due to not having any loads, credit cards, or credit facilities of any kind (apart from a mobile phone contract), I was rejected.
I need to start building my credit, so how long should I wait before applying for a "bad credit" card like the Capital One Extra? Is appealing to Santander even worth it?
Any good cashback cards for a "credit unknown" like myself?

you could appeal to santander if you can show wage slips, a copy of your credit report showing no "bad" entries and maybe a utility bill or two but it may well be in vain. Try capital one, although from experience they won't touch you if you're not on the electoral roll.Oh, you wee bazza!0

are you in fulltime employment, on the electoral roll, do you have a previous current a/c?0

You could apply now. Or even try Vanquis."You know when it's cold outside when you go outside and it's cold"0 -

If you've past defaults, bankruptcies or CCJs, then these will adversely affect your credit rating. However, there are lenders who cater for this area and so it may still be possible to obtain finance for various products.
Some companies offer a free credit checking service. One example is Piggy Bank
And what's your position in Piggybank?"You know when it's cold outside when you go outside and it's cold"0 -

Top tip - don't just cut and paste from your website, you dimwit.

I am in full time employment, on the electoral roll, and have had a previous current account for 9 years. No CCJ's etc, or anything indicating I would be high-risk.You could apply now. Or even try Vanquis.
I read that applying for too many credit facilities in a short space of time is bad for your credit score. Would it be wise to apply so soon after being rejected?0 -

try the barclaycard soft search that doesn't leave a trace on your credit file

Thanks for the suggestion. I was looking at cashback cards, are the freedom rewards any good? You can't see the "cost" of items without first being a barclaycard holder.0 -

unlikely, but not impossible to get a top class card as your very first one
get any card at all and use it regularly for normal shopping, pay in full and then after 6 months or so try for a cashback
maybe try the bank you held an a/c for 9 years with0 -

Royal Bank of Scotland do not have a cashback credit card afaik?
Here's a link for the freedom rewards in case anyone is as stupid as me and can't find it:

I would prefer the santander 123 credit card, but this is a somewhat worthy substitute as I can redeem some points at places I would normally spend at anyway, so that's some consolation.0
