Talk Talk internet dropping out

Talk Talk internet regularly dropping out.

And no idea why.

Son is getting increasingly frustrated at xbox 1 games being disconnected (wireless). I'm noticing it on desktop as well.

Router is talk talk d-link dsl-2780 adsl2+

I'm vague because I no little about these things.

Seems to happen on Fifa 14 (xbox 1) but also happened on same game for the 360.

Its becomming unusable

I had that on and off for about a year and after much discussion with talk talk who thought it must have been something I was doing, decided to charge me 50 quid to send an engineer out. My guess was I needed a new router and when I changed to plusnet I had no problems. Wifi also disappeared and its been no problem since I changed internet providers.

Good luck trying to get it sorted, I found it a completely frustrating experience and Im very glad I changed to plusnet. The call centre is in the UK, they are helpful if you need support. And Im only sorry I didnt change to them sooner.

I often wonder, when yours drops out, does someone else's come on ?
    Be happy...;)
  • The last 10 minutes or so no shouting is coming from upstairs so I'm guessing its ok.

Just did a couple of those speed test things-downloads around 10-12mb.

I've just gone into rolling contract so am thinking of changing.

Can you change your router to a different channel? When mine kept losing the connection it was because of interference from others in the vicinity.
Although I think that was just the wifi, not the desktop.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I found the best way was to raise an online ticket with TalkTalk on the online forum - talking to their script reading 'staff' on the phone was frustrating beyond belief.

If the desktop PC is connected by ethernet not wireless (you don't say), then it's not going to be a wireless channel issue.
If both use wireless, retest using ethernet: if the problem goes away, it''s a wireless issue and the first thing to do is change the channel.
Wireless issues have nothing to do with TT, they're down to you to resolve-all they do is get the signal to your router.

    Thanks for that.

If it makes any difference when looking up available networks no neighbours seem to be on talk talk. I wouldn't know how to change channels.

When the connection goes down completely all devices go off (green lights going off and on router until eventually staying on) including laptop, desktop, and xbox. I don't mind if it happens now and again but it is appearing more frequently.

However, even when the desktop is working ok (ethernet cable) the boy is complaining xbox 1 is dropping out (wireless)

Have to wonder whether it is fifa 14 game. It does happen on cod as well.

When upstairs with laptop (wireless) if xbox plays up(lag and disconnection) from xbox live, laptop also can play up whilst ethernet desktop is going fine.

So are you saying it's happening both with wireless and with ethernet?
If you use an app such as InSSIDer to look up the networks available, it will also show you the channel number. They don't have to be on TT to use the same channel. neigbouring Networks using the same channel can cause interference and loss of signal, if this is the cause then the remedy (changing the channel ) takes 2 minutes. You simply log into the router interface (the manual will tell you how), go to the wireless setting page and change the channel. Save and exit.
Try this first because it's quick, free and you have nothing to lose.

    some good advice above.

Does it happen at any particular time?

Does it happen at all during the day or only in the evening?

It may be contention for network resources in the exchange or between you and the exchange if a lot of people are all trying to use their Internet for gaming, TV streaming, Netfix etc.
