Thanks for taking our comments on board so graciously! Pugs do have lovely personalities usually, that's why its so sad to see what's happened to them.

The thing about crossbreeds being healthier is sort of true but also widely misunderstood. A true mongrel, with a really broad mix of genetic material, will generally be healthier than a pedigree. There aren't as many of those about as there used to be though, now that people are more responsible about neutering and not letting their dogs roam the streets.

Just crossing two pedigrees, both of which are prone to genetic conditions or have extreme physical features as a result of generations of inbreeding, doesn't generally do any good. What you usually get is a dog that may be prone to the health problems of both breeds! Some breeders are starting to sensibly try and introduce a bit of crossbreeding to widen the gene pools of their breeds, and try to improve their health a bit, but this doesn't happen overnight or in one mating sadly!

May I gently suggest that you do loads and loads more research on dog ownership in general before you start to think about an actual pup. Read these boards for a bit, read the forums at dog pages.org.uk, maybe pick up copies of some of the dog magazines when you're at the supermarket.

A lot of dog owners are really winging it and muddling through with their first dogs (not knocking them, that's what my parents did with our first when I was a kid!) but if you are really armed with a good amount of knowledge and know what to expect, you'll find the whole experience much easier and much more rewarding.

Can I suggest a trip to discover dogs?

Meeting with a whole array of dogs that you can talk to owners and breed representatives about, get the breed club details of a long list Nd think about?

Their are LOTS of short haired, nice natured small dogs. As to the exact temperament, some is breed, some is individual, but most is what you will put in at home.

There really is a breed for almost every circumstance. Its also worth trying some of the online breed selector tools. There are lots of them and many come back with breeds I don't have, I enjoy long at them and thinking , yes...if I didn't have mine they would be a good breed for me. So
Me people say they won't consider them because 'their breed' is perfect for them, but I think we grow to adapt to our dogs some what too. :).

They are only a starting point though.

If you dont have to have one "tomorrow", then it may be worth getting in touch with your local rescues and explaining that you would prefer a pup / younger dog, while most will probably have a waiting list, the right dog is worth the wait!
  • I want this little fella! What a pug 100 years ago. Such a shame the faces have been made so flat. images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSYBrJPe7gscPTihJRxDz9usCGDjXlT_VHpSZL2nnDVsVP8Bprb3A

They usually give you a handful of choices. What were the others?

That was the first quiz I did and it only gave that result.

Others said bichon frise (although they are quite hairy), Schipperke (they seem hairy & bouncy) and another even gave a staffy which completely ignore my small dog highly important selection.

I love pomeranian's too, but I can imagine it would be quite costly to keep their fur short. Unless I learnt to do it myself

I'll speak up for bichons, I've had a few and they've always been really laid back and absolutely fantastic with children. I even looked into training my current one as a therapy dog, he's that chilled out!

However, yes, the hair. Mine are kept short, in a pet clip, so not crazy amounts of grooming, but they still need a brush every other day and either a trip to the groomer or clipping at home every couple of months.

The other downside is that they're a favourite of the puppy farmers, so you need to be really really careful where you get your pup from.

Well I hope you have better luck than we did with our little pug.she carried the pde gene, and died at three years of age,op research into breeds health history,it will save you loads of heartache x

  • I have two pug crosses.

Doug had a Pug dad and a miniature Jack Russell mum, he was an accidental litter and we rescued him from a home where their current dog hated him. He was 9 weeks old.

He is now a year old and the most lovely little dog I could wish for, he is smart and cuddly loves walks but can also be lazy. The (Jug) as they call them can often have problems with their undershot jaws and bowed out legs. This is something I will just have to keep an eye on in the future and he is insured.

We also have Daisy she is a Puggle but is VERY puggy looking, I think her granddad was a Beagle. She was another rescue, we took her from a not so nice home. She is coming up 1 year old next month and although I love her to pieces and she is the sweetest little girl she has been hard work, we think she was hit for weeing in her previous home so she would often hold her wee for ages until she just had to go normally on the sofa or carpet! But with lots and lots of positive training we have taught her the command and she will now go outside. She is also quite destructive and as a result when they are alone is in a large puppy pen with a plastic bed, blanket, food, water and some hardwearing toys, she is in the same room as Doug so they can see each other. She has previously eaten his beds, the skirting board, some carpet and had started on one of the snake vivariums! She did also have quite bad separation anxiety but luckily crate training and lots of love and care has sorted this.

From what I have read Puggles are very sensitive souls and being mistreated as a pup has had a bad effect on Daisy, it has taken a LOT of time and love to sort her out and she still isn't 100% but fortunately we think she is worth the effort.

I have seen a few Jug and Puggle's up for rescue so it would be nice if you could take on one of these as they are great little dogs but at the same time you wouldn't be handing your money over to a possibly unethical breeder.
