What if I refuse 2 pay Sky?

I am so angry with Sky.I have just been on the phone to them,at a stupid cost but that's another gripe,to be told I have to pay them even tho I have cancelled them,as its gone through.
My reason for not wanting to pay this month is because the sky box in question was up for a repair on the 29th this month, but because I have since cancelled them they say there's no point in repairing it....well I beg to differ,I still have until 16th next month, but because the box is crap, and I AM NOT USING it,my argument is why should I pay for something I'm not using,we all know we pay in advance,so I said what if I cancel my direct debit,he said we will just keep trying.....so what I'm asking is...should I cancel the debit???PLEASE can anyone advise me
OMG I have been with Sky for donkeys years, yes I know,we are just a number, loyalty counts for nothing.....roll on my Freesat I have ordered...

The box is your property, they will pay to repair it as a gesture of goodwill, why would they give a goodwill gesture to someone who has already cancelled?

If you cancel the direct debit they will most likely eventually pass it on to debt collectors.

It really really really isnt worth the hassle , they will just bump it to collections and then you`ll just wish you had been the bigger man

Your Sky contract is a credit agreement. If you dont pay what will happen is:
Sky will continue to pursue you for the payment.
At some point they will put a default on your credit report.
At some point they will get bored of chasing you and pass it on to a debt collection agency who wont get bored. These people will send you LOTS of letters, phone you endlessly and may even knock on your door. At this point you dont actually need to even speak to them and if they are getting on your nerves a bit too much you can actually take them to court. There are rules governing what they can do (although they probably wont obey them) so court can get them to back off regardless of if you owe the debt or not. They cant enter your home or take your property.
If you are still ignoring them they may then pass it back to Sky to obtain a court judgment against you. If this happens they will have to send you a notice before action letter (they may send one of these anyway just to scare you). If they do proceed you will get notification of when and where the court hearing is. If the court judgment goes against you they will pass it on to proper bailiffs. These people can take your property. If it gets this far your original debt will have more than doubled though.
  • Thank you all for your help. The box is still under warranty,I suppose I shall have to pay and as usual be the looser.
I am angry because yes I did cancel, but they wont call out to repair the box, because I cancelled sky...I'm not in a contract so to speak, having been with them for years, and my argument is that if they wont repair the box,so I can still view until my cut off day, then why should I pay for something I cant use, dont we all pay in advance,,,it don't matter I will pay and then cancel the blimmin lot i.e. phone

You are in contract with them - there is always a minimum term of contract initially but after that time you are on a rolling 31 day contract until the end of the 31 day period after you gave notice to cancel. If you cancel the direct debit you will break your contract and void your notice of cancellation and be back on a 31 day rolling contract. Under the terms of your contract there must be a payment method in existance and breach of those terms voids the cancellation notice. That is the legal situation although you may not like to hear it.

A warranty repair on the box doesn't mean you don't pay for the service while it's under repair.
As already pointed out, the equipment is yours from day one-it's not leased. Sky will fix it or replace it while in warranty, and they might credit you for the downtime if you asked nicely-which it seems you didn't.

But you wouldn't have been the (sic) "looser" if you hadn't cancelled!
You don't say why on earth you cancelled AFTER asking for a repair/replacement of your box?

    What will that achieve exactly?
  • Just to clarify I've been with sky over 10 years, the box goes faulty, they say they will repair it,in 3 WEEKS TIME,so I have a box I cannot use, cannot watch TV,and so decide to get a Freesat pvr (came today tg).I then think right I'm going to cancel sky,and I do...I say will the box still be repaired, and he says there's no point really if your cancelling. So there I am with still up until 16th Feb with no box/tv to watch.watch. I'm also told it cannot be repaired because the cancellation has gone through...So its okay to take my money, but sorry we cant/wont help, all red tape I think, seems like I said before there's no loyalty.
Anyway I now have my Freesat, and wish Id done so sooner.I shall pay but then that's that...no more Sky profits from me...Oh and I see the adverts on now,Come to sky etc etc, they must be noticing a drop,I wonder why.why. Btw Macman I am always polite to anyone,it don't do me much good on the whole :-(
