Just got an email supposedly from Logmein saying the Free service has been scrapped as of today.
Logmein website has crashed at this point.

Can anybody confirm? Is this a hoax?

EDIT Just accessed their blog. Seems to confirm it. Crazy stuff. No warning whatsosever.

EDIT Website working again. Still able to access account in a roundabout way.

My Email arrived on same day as the closure of Free version!

Apparently there might be 1 week's grace on the 21st Jan deadline. Either way I'm not going near LMI now due to the ridiculously short notice they gave, bordering on unethical.

The next best FREE alternative is apparently Teamviewer for non-commercial use only.

Now I am seriously wondering what is going to happen to Cubby as one logs in with the same credentials as Logmein. So looking rather urgently for a Cubby alternative too.

This instant closure is guaranteed to leave many people with 'marooned' computers, and some people may be travelling and relying on LMI for access to an unattended home machine.

I think that LMI know this perfectly well and hope to railroad a lot of users to pay up immediately!

The replacement to go for is Teamviewer free for home users - the unattended mode gives you what LMI used to do.

Another which I've used is CrossLoop. Just ignore all the stuff about creating accounts and finding experts and go for the Screen Sharing free option.

The person whose screen you're controlling also has to install this software, and when you both start it up the far-end person has to tell you their magic 12-digit code which you have to enter, to get to control their PC.

Yes I had the email. Shame as I found logmein much better than using VNC but for the small amount I use it not worth paying for.

So some version of VNC for me I suppose. Workplace firewalls can be a showstopper though.
