Well are they all the same? I always felt David Trimble and John Hume were fine men. Plenty of others - Seamus Mallon, Eddie mcgrady, ken maginnis - decent men who were sidelined by hot heads, since only extremists could make a credible deal. Sad truth is the gfa rewArds extremism .

As for Catholics voting for Paisley, I'd say only from the illiterates. Some years ago a friend counted votes in lurgan. Some votes were 1 Sinn Fein 2 Trimble . Looks like reading was a problem there.

I'm pretty sure a some did. My first girlfriend was from up that neck of the woods and when a catholic family down the road were in a spot of bother Paisley himself came to the house and stayed for a few hours until he got it sorted for them. Was quite the tourist attraction that day. I'm led to believe they voted Paisley from that day on.

I met him a few times at various functions and I very much got the impression there were two sides. The public voice of extreme unionism we all know, but I also felt that he took his responsibilities to his constituents very seriously, regardless of their background.

It was well known by many Catholics if they wanted a NIHE house go to Paisley. He did seem to do it.

Never liked him myself, always felt like a brainwashed cult.

It's well recognised that if you want something from your town council (planning permission for a rural monstrosity for example), you contact a councillor who's one of "the others" as he might see the possibility of a vote from outside his usual clientele, even if only a 2nd preference.

As for Catholics voting for Paisley, I suspect they're like banshees and Loch Ness monsters - only other people have ever seen them.

Are you sure that's not a typo in the last word there?

Forgive my crude sense of humour but I thought that was extremely funny.
