Hi All,
I am a first time buyer and have a few questions.
So i am about to complete on my purchase next week and i was wondering what the process is in covering the cost of bills?
How do i go about getting the following in place?
Council tax?
Electricity?
Gas?
Water?
Is there anything else i am missing?
Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks

Council tax - speak to your local council, they'll take details and send you a bill.
Gas and electricity - you're stuck with the previous occupants supplier. You can stay with them and select a tariff or chose to move elsewhere. You need to speak with the current supplier about payments.
Water - is it on a meter or water rates? Either way you'll need to speak to the local waterboard and advise them of your date of onwership.
Telephone and internet?
Sky TV?
Have ypu redirected your mail?
Informed banks/employer/DVLA etc of your new address?0 -

'Other stuff'?
Inform people of your new address:
* HMRC
* insurers
* DVLC
* employer
* bank
* pension provider
* etc etc etc
Arrange broadband/phone.
Set up royal mail post forwarding
Google 'moving home what to do' or similar for complete lists.0 -
the property information forms your sellers filled in should say who the suppliers are for gas and electricity so you know who to contact. Make sure that you provide meter readings so you don't end up paying for any of the sellers energy use.
You need to update your drivers licence and the details for your car and car insurance to make sure that your insurance remains in place (speak to the insurers - you may have to pay an admin fee, and may have
to pay a further premium, or be entitled to partial refund)
Don't forget o tell your curent providers that you are moving out of your current property, and provide meter readings where necessary.
Set up redirection with Royal Mail to ensure that you get any post which goes to the old address either becauase you forget to inform a company, or because they are slow to update their records.
Check with your new lender when they will take the first mortgage payment and how much it will be (usually it is higher than the normal monthly payment as if you move on (say) 22nd Jan, and your mortgage is normally going to go out on 1st of the month, your first mortgage payment will be 1 full month for Feb plus 8 days worth for for January)
When you speak to the council and utility comapanies etc ask them how soon you will get paperwork from then, and make a note of what they say, so you can follow up if it doesn't arrive when expected.All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0
