It means you can walk into any HSBC branch, pick up the phone and talk directly to FD staff rather than wasting money or minutes ringing them up yourself.

It also means you can use their terminals and ATMs, cash deposit machines, etc, even go to the counter and ask for cash.

You can also use most banks ATMs. The ones that charge clearly say so before you even insert your card (mainly pubs and clubs)

Neither - but it does answer your 3rd question.

If you were unaware that FD is part of HSBC then you have not read the FD Ts&Cs. Had you done so it would have answered your questions more reliably than strangers on a forum.

It is strongly advised that you read the Ts&Cs before applying for an account rather than becoming one of those people who could not be bothered and then comes on these forums complaining when things are not as they had assumed.

FD has a daily limit of £500.

No hidden charges if you use any other mainstream bank's ATM.

You can walk into any HSBC bank and use your FD debit card to withdraw large sums of money, pay cash or cheques etc into your account.

You can walk into any HSBC bank and use your FD debit card to withdraw large sums of money, pay cash or cheques etc into your account.

Read the recent reports about HSBC not allowing withdrawals of larger amounts without proof of what you want to use the money for. Plus, people report they weren't allowed to deposit larger amounts without having written evidence regarding the source of funds.

Well personally i've never had a problem withdrawing 5 figure sums of cash from First Direct via my local HSBC branch - i do this regularly every few months. I inform FD a day or two beforehand and they let the branch know in advance. Just because some people have had issues withdrawing/depositing large amounts of cash doesn't mean to say everyone else has as well. Even if FD/HSBC wanted proof of the source of my funds, i'd be happy to provide them with evidence :)

They are awful when you need anything above the £500 ATM limit.

You need to cash a cheque at the HSBC counter or speak to an overseas call centre beforehand to set up the HSBC counter withdrawal.

That was pre their new anti-money laundering rules...
