Are people using too much energy

  • I agree with people wasting energy. I turn all plugs off except for the fridge freezer, if I am out for the day I also tend to turn the modem plug off too. The cooker switch gets turned on only when I am cooking.

I know people who leave all the lights on, pc and tv when not in use!!My parents do!

My daughter is good at turning the plugs off now :). I live in a flat, my Direct debit has just dropped £25 a month (YAY). My forecast for this year is Electricity is £196.33 and Gas is £335.93. I plan to cut my gas down tho as I think it's too high.
    Debts CC1 1424 // CC2 1836.65 // CC3 [STRIKE]973.40[/STRIKE] 823.70 // CC4 [STRIKE]609.05[/STRIKE] 459.04 // Very [STRIKE]422.25[/STRIKE] ah now 533.53 :(
    Total [STRIKE]7036.54[/STRIKE] 5076.92  !!!

Let's imagine everybody halves their usage. Do you think energy companies will halve the prices or will they double them?

Use less by all means, but don't go whinging when it costs more in future!

Hi nic, I am wondering if you have solar power?
Then it helps if it is only 2 people in one house.

Here there is 4 adults and that is a lot of washing. machine on several times a day.

people also spread out, not every one in the same room all day evening.

I save by unplugging, not using the tumble dryer.. Half size oven.

i still pay about a 1000 a year for duel fuel.
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

The OPs bills aren't realistic. I pay more in standing charges!

    Hi,

Just before xmas I submitted my meter readings for the last quarter. Before this my elec/gas provider had done a few estimated reads. I submitted my readings and was shocked that for the quarter we used only £30 of gas and electricity. I had the energy company check it and they said it was correct. (The actuals were quite a bit lower than their estimates)

Anyway this got me thinking. With the average annual energy bill now £1400 are people using too much energy? Or more than they need and not making the effort to cut down.

Now I live in a new house that has all the insulation under the sun so naturally we save money there. However me and my wife are both sticklers for saving energy. Every bulb is enery saving or the lowest watt possible. We only have the radiators on in the rooms we are in and only the light in the rooms we are in are on. Everything is turned off before bed and while we are at work/school.

I don't even leave the LED clock on on the cooker (bit extreme I know)

So yeah are people using more energy than needed or is it maybe due to poor insulation in houses/old appliances. I know plasma TV's are a massive drain we changed our Plasma to LED and noticed quite a sizeable drop in electric use.

I think it's shocking that the average bill is now £1400, of course the energy companies need be brought in line/nationalised as this is just not sustainable. And maybe properties should be looked at in terms of insulaiton and people educated in what in their house is using a lot of energy.

We don't have mains gas (use oil) but the standing charge for electricity is £12.60 a quarter......we have an electric double oven but a calor hob.

We have a new house, well insulated and do turn things off....though not the display on the oven, or the sky box, or smoke alarms or heating control unit, or the door bell.

Our house is large with 5 beds and 3 bathrooms......and if I could have electricity bills of £30 a month - let alone a quarter, I'd be more than delighted.....

The cost to run a fridge freezer is around £30 a year for decent one....it costs about £35 a year to run our washing machine...it's a decent energy efficient one.....

Our standing charge is £12.60 a quarter, cost to run the F/F would be £7.50 a quarter and the washing machine £9 a quaarter - that's almost £30 without turning on a light or watching tv or charging a phone or boiling the kettle.
