Are people using too much energy

I assume you are talking about 2.39:1? as 1.78:1 would offer no saving, 1.85:1 would offer only a tiny saving, and there are very few releases in Ultra-Panavision at 2.75:1.Or widescreen films at a proper brightness level.
I still doubt at 2.39:1 or even 2.75:1, that the small area of black would allow a plasma to compete with an properly configured LCD showing the same material.0 -
It all depends on the content, aspect and your monitors settings. You clearly know your stuff, and my comments were more aimed for those switching from Plasma to LCD/LED to check rather than to assume an energy saving.I assume you are talking about 2.39:1? as 1.78:1 would offer no saving, 1.85:1 would offer only a tiny saving, and there are very few releases in Ultra-Panavision at 2.75:1.

Me? I use a DLP projector and don't have a TV at all. Screen has movable tabs so I can do any aspect within reason

Well yes, it will always come down to that eventually. Plasma's have come a long way in terms of power saving, but some of the old ones are awful. It all depends on the content, aspect and your monitors settings.
My dad has a 50" plasma, and you can feel the heat radiating from the screen from two feet away!:D0 -
for the quarter we used only £30 of gas and electricity
Maybe you have a different meter to me. But, for example, they estimated 3300 on the gas, but the actual was 2800 so less than what they estimated so less usage.
.
Not really clear, what you are using and over what period, is it £30/quarter gas and electric in winter, or £30 gas and £30 electric, or £30/month, or something else?
you are unlikely to get 2800kwh of gas for under £100, so where does the £30/quarter including electricity come from?
Are you quoting actuals starts and end, or estimate start, actual end? Are you in one bedroom flat, or a five bedroom house. How much per kwh, how much standing charge. etc etc. Too many variables to make any meaningful comparison with others, but even in the smallest most insulated home possible, £120pa in total on power is nigh on impossible for a typical user!!

You must be taking the washing home to Mum and eating takeaways to use lest than 3kw a day.Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

Yes people do use too much. I average
a day. However the less people use the more per unit it will cost. 0 -
Using more than ever, Gas bill is around £1200 a year, Electric is around £800 a year.
Until that doubles I wont be cutting back and it would be hard to anyway due to keeping tropical fish and working from home.0 -
The Plasma Vs LCD/LED TV is a well documented misconception.
There is another point which is often ignored.
I have just replaced my plasma TV (400W) with a LCD/LED (130W). Am I saving electricity ? No ! Because I am running my (electric) heating more to make up for the loss of heat from the TV.
I know exactly how electricity I am using as I try and read (and record) my meters everyday.0
