I've been a fool and fallen for the tax return scam. I really need their phone number so I can ring and try and get a refund of the money they conned out of me. Please don't write on here if you just want to tell me how stupid I am only if you can help me get my father in laws £500 back ASAP!!!!
Any advise appreciated

Phoning probably won't help. You have to write to most of these sites. Can you post which one it was? You're a Newbie so you'll have to munge the name a bit, use "DOT" instead of "."Are you for real? - Glass Half Empty??

Hi, thanks!!! I wish I'd started my MSE career on a better note though! It's taxreturngatewaydotcom. I feel such a fool but it's the first site to come up on google and when you're in a rush it's so easy to click immediately on submit tax return. I just thought HMRC had updated their website0

You're probably not going to get any money back. Their website is clear about the charges and the lack of a connection between themselves and HMRC.
Their website says that you can call them if you are a client, check the email that they sent you with their phone number:By Phone
Existing clients can call us on the telephone number provided in your confirmation email. Please use email for pre-sales enquiries.
Lines are open between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays.
Don't get your hopes up though

It's not that clear citricsquid, as this happened to me too on 18th Jan 2014, though I won't be taking it lying down - far from it.
I thought it was the updated Government Gateway website though somewhat slicker. It's devious and deceptive - look at the colouring of th "SUBMIT A TAX RETURN" button. I've called them and emailed them and spent 1 hour waiting to get through this morning. They told me there was no refund and I couldn't cancel the service.
I've been on to my Credit Card Co - TESCO BANK who will investigate, I've written a recorded letter to the Directors; Mr Stephen Graham Oliver, Mr James Wyatt, Mr Michael Hughes - who also ran Driving License Services Ltd - a similar Service Company - demanding a refund.
I've also called the Citizens Advice Bureau, The Trading Standards and the Office of Fair Trading. Also try Which Consumer Services and for £49 you can get their legal services. I've also e-mailed BBC Watchdog - suggest you do the same.
Distance Selling Legislation states; "you must waive your rights to cancel a service" in order for the contract to be enforceable. I did not event know I was buying a service let alone waive my right to cancel one - I thought I was paying a Tax Bill!!
I "cancelled" the service as soon as it became obvious I had purchased one - about 1 hour after they took my credit card details. If they were a bone fide organisation they would give a refund with no quibble as they have incurred no costs and suffered no loss or inconvenience.
The more people that complain about this the more publicity it will get and the fewer people that will get scammed...0 -
I read an article warning about this company in one of the newspapers over the weekend. Google had removed the advert after earlier complaints and it has now appeared again. There were stories of people who had paid the fee and then discovered that they were in fact due a refund from HMRC.
If you google copycat website tax return. You'll find the article (plus others)0 -
I really dont get this. Why are people giving their card details if they think they are submitting their tax return on the genuine hmrc site?0

I too got stung by their website yesterday (19th Jan 2014), my laptop was playing up and freezing, I was originally on the correct website but then my machine froze, after couple of times of switching off and on I was back up and running again, but by this time I was rushing to get it done and panicking that my machine was going to freeze again so went into the wrong website, this rip off that is Tax Return Gateway. As soon as I realised I'd submitted to the wrong website I tried to call them but after an hour on hold have to give up. I then tried again this morning and again was on hold for an hour, but then finally got through to be told they couldn't cancel my submission and that the £500 cannot be refunded. I have called my credit card company (Tesco) to see about reclaiming it back but they're not too helpful...I'm gutted. That's £500 I really don't have - there have been tears.0

By the way, FreddieFinney - their number is 0843 497 0000 - good luck.0

Their website does not claim they have any professional qualifications at all; so you cannot complain to any professional tax or accounting body if they do not belong to any.
They may however be acting criminally if they are not registered with a supervisor for anti-money laundering purposes. HMRC are in charge of enforcement.
HMRC say (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/mlr/reportsuspicion.htm):
"Report a non-registered business
If you want to report a business that you think should be registered under Money Laundering Regulations but isn't you can call the Customs Hotline (see the link below).
