Assuming you won't be towing the caravan that much, I would opt for a petrol 4x4. OK the fuel consumption will be more, but this is offset by the fact it will be cheaper to fix. A lot of people are blinded by the good fuel consumption diesels give, but then the savings are wiped out come repair time.
If you are only doing short journeys, fuel economy will be rubbish regardless of whether you get a diesel or petrol.0 -

We know (and it has been confirmed) that our Mazda 6 (2006) has some engine faults - such as a serious DPF blockage. I bought the car last year, and no engine warning lights have ever come on, even when first starting the car. Does anyone know how I can get these to illuminate to highlight the faults? There are very few lights that come on, on the dashboard, when starting the engine.0

has someone removed some bulbs from the instrument cluster? Sounds strange0
-
You have a faulty instrument cluster or the bulbs are missing/not working.0
-
Thanks for the advice - does anyone know how to access these bulbs/the cluster?0
-
Do any warning lights at all illuminate when you start the car? If none do it could presumably be as simple as a fuse having gone.0

Some do come on, just not the check engine light - thanks for the suggestion though0

Just look at DPF removal or blanking kits.....0
