A spoiler relocates the area of turbulent air behind the car further back and so improves the rear stability.

Slightly off - do you think this why UK Touring Caravan manufacturers fit them?

A spoiler CAN improve airflow, reduce drag or improve downforce. If it's designed, positioned and angled to do so. It might not be pretty, though.

Equally, a spoiler can do somewhere around nowt effective - or even be worse - but be fitted purely for cosmetics.

Three guesses which are more common...

Speaking of purely cosmetic mods, I was going to post pictures from the new Fast&Furious film in this thread but decided against it because there would be spoilers.

    (I'll get my coat)

A mate of mine bought a brand new Vectra when they first came out. He had the extras, cloth seat protection, pain protection, mudflaps, floor mats and a Factory Fitted Spoiler.

It was great, you had to hold the tailgate open as it was too heavy for the struts.
If the cranial impact damage to your skull wasn't enough if it slipped you also got whipped by the aerial as it fouled against it making it spring back toward you.

    Pointless, utterly pointless.

How does that work, do they just give you a different car?
