There do appear to be isolated exceptions.

Pubs will give cashback on credit cards if -
- they are not paying tax on that money
- they frequently get robbed
- it costs them more to bank it than they are paying in CC fees0 -
It's usually because they think they'll get most of the cash back in payment for more drinks / food :beer:Pubs will give cashback on credit cards if -

It is fact.No card machine or shop till will offer you cash back when using a credit card. This is only offered to debit card users.
Yet others have stated that the store Wilkinsons do offer cashback to credit card customers. And various small retailers such as pubs will also do it.
I've been in a pub myself and had crisp notes placed in my hand via a credit card transaction. I was not charged any fees or interest.0 -
It is fact.
The card machine or till itself won't offer cashback on a credit card (which is what you're saying), but the person(s)* operating the till may offer cashback (which is what o4u is saying).
I can see how it could easily be done at a pub, but Wilkinsons are taking a bit of a risk aren't they?
* Said person(s) will no doubt be in breach of their (or their company's) agreement with the merchant acquirer though?0 -
The moral of this story is...generally speaking, no, you can't get cash back using a credit card (with some exceptions).
With a little imagination, however, you can get pretty close... Tesco sell gift cards - their own and for loads of shops. With a 0% card you could effectively prepay for much of your shopping in advance by buying up a heap of gift cards and using them instead of cash for a few weeks/months.
I did this last year. Bought around £3k of Tesco gift cards which went onto a 0% credit card which then freed up money from my current account (salary etc) to max out my ISA savings allowance nice and early in the year. Bear in mind that nowadays you can buy pretty much anything from Tesco (direct), not just your food shop.0 -

As far as I know the Wilkinson trick ended long ago. And if you want to be semantic, the money from the pub isn't really cashback. The cashier will be fraudulently claiming to the machine that you are paying £20 for food and drink, not receiving cash (hence why it goes through as a purchase with no cash advance fees).0 -

Just wondering but don't they have to pay 20% VAT on that?
If that's correct then how can it possibly be in their interests to do that?0
