Getting Cashback at Supermarket Till on 0% Card

Options
Hi

I've just got a Tesco 0% for 18 months card, and was wondering if I ask for cashback at at a till in a supermarket, is this regarded as a purchase (therefore 0%), or a cash advance (hefty charge.)

Thanks

As a general rule you won't be able to ask for cashback when using it. If the shop allows it (some pubs etc) it'll run through as a purchase.
  • I've been using only cash and debit cards for past 10 years, so am pretty ignorant with regards to this. I'm not intending to build up any sort of debt however, with my new credit card.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has managed to get cashback in a pub/shop, and if so where.

    Thanks

Wilkinsons have been known to offer it.

As for pubs, are you willing to travel, or hoping one of them just happens to be your local? ;)
  • No I'm afraid I've never heard of Wilkinson's, so I reckon there are none near me. Pity, that. I was hoping I'd would be able to get cash back at places like Marks n Spencers or ASDA, but it's looking unlikely....

I work in Asda, glamorously enough. When you're at the checkout, if you're paying by debit card, you'll normally hear two beeps. It's because the till asks if you want cashback and we have to press enter twice to say no. With a CC, it skips that bit and goes straight to the PIN.

No card machine or shop till will offer you cash back when using a credit card. This is only offered to debit card users.

This is because the retailer will be charged 2.5% for the cash back amount on a credit card, on a debit card it's about 20p.
  • Thanks dotdash79, I was coming to that conclusion also.....

This is how it's meant to be.

There do appear to be isolated exceptions.

there certainly are exceptions. my local pub used to give me cashback on my CapOne credit card, which was very cashback generative.

there is another pub not too far away that does the same, but i don't go very often.

i have been offered cashback on credit cards in shops in the past, but largely because staff dont understand what they are doing.
