South East Water Meter Problems

Options
On 16th Jan 2014 South East Water installed a water meter. They privide a leaflet advising you to read the meter regularly to check usage and also describe in their booklet how to check for leaks by turning water off at the mains. SE Water read their meters wirelessly. When I took the lid off the meter cover I found the dial was at the bottom of the hole (naturally) where the water pipe was. However, the dial was obscured by another fitting. Even with 20 20 vision (which I have) it could not be read. The new stop valve was also deep in the hole and there was no stick or lever to turn it. My friend in Kent has a meter from Southern Water. The dial is clearly visible and there is a little plastic stick to turn off the valve provided by Southern water. So it can be done. When I contacted SE Water they told me I was not supposed to read the meter. They would do it. They would not allow me to buy a wireless reader. Also I was not supposed to turn it off - they would do that also. It was their meter. Each response could take up to 10 days. I am 66. If I get a water leak in the supply pipe or with my in house stop !!!! (which happened to me recently) I now have serious problems. SE Water need to get their act together, be more customer responsive and think of older people who are not so easily able to lie in the mud in winter to turn off a stop !!!!.

From OFWAT website page Meter Reading -
You can also read the meter yourself, and you may be able to update the estimated reading. Your water company can also explain how to read your meter.
It may be worth getting in touch with them.

You obviously should be able to verify meter readings yourself.
