I agree in part with you, but you have to look at each individual case. In her case she doesn't work, she's nearly 70 and I was referring to Attendance Allowance (DLA for the older person), there are no relatives that we would stay with, she certainly doesn't go out shopping, she prefers her home and her garden over everything else.

You can't claim for the 'what if's', it's factual for the individual claimant.

I am afraid you can claim for what ifs. So simply because she does not go shopping is no grounds for not claiming. Perhaps she could go if you claimed?

Anyway it is up to you if you claim or not but simply because you choose not to because you "think" your wife doesn't need it because she doesn't want to go shopping does not mean others can't claim because they perhaps want to do those things.
  • So does your wife not go out at all then? She simply sits about at home all the time 24/7? How does she cook, clean, fetch the shopping? Do you do that for her? Do you order it for her for delivery?

Does she need special cutlery and any adaptations for getting dressed? If that is the case then she is entitled to be fair. Those things need replacing and maintaing for a start.

I can't comment on attendance allowance but with the new PIP the advice sheet asks you about washing in a normal bath.. so even if you have an adapted room it asks if you would manage in a bath.. this is in the guide from benefits and work.

PIP gives points for needing aids etc.. i wonder if attendance allowance does too?

Of course it is completely your decision to apply or not.. but just having the aids doesn't make you ineligible..

People slag PIP but I think it is more sensible and simpler. It also reminds you at each question that you put the help you need even if you don't get the help. It is help you reasonably need. It's then all backed up with a DWP medical so malicious people can just shut their faces about claimants.

Yes. I was told if I use aids (which I do) I need to explain the limations of them and why I'd still need help. IE, setting the aid up to use properly.

It is so blooming confusing with all the guides.

I state why I can't use a normal bath.. explain i have adapted wetroom and the aids i use.. explain any problems i still have.. and then leave it up to them.

With PIP you can get the lower value points for needing and using an aid.. the next level seems to be if you still need help despite the aid.

I find the whole thing really confusing so just write everything down and send it off.

Which is what i suggest people do if they want to apply and think they might e eligible.

The new thing with pip is tasks have to be done RELIABLY.. this means if you can't do it reliably, repeatedly, safely or in a timely manner it counts as NO.. this has come from the 'fluctuating conditions panel' and is stated in advice from some of the big charities etc.. its a big break through for PIP but sadly not on the form from what I can see.. again I don't know if it applies to Attendance Allowance

Exactly!! You can only describe the help you need if you still need it after taking into account medication/surgery/aids/adaptions & appliances.

I could describe the help that I would need if I wasn't taking the medication that is prescribed for me. With the medication, that help is reduced considerably to more or less nothing. Likewise I need a new right hip. It is sheer agony without the pain relief, and as after a new hip is installed, I should be right as rain. If I refused the op & I didn't take my medication I would probably qualify, but then I am manipulating the system to obtain a welfare benefit which is illegal.

But isn't that just nitpicking? Trying to find an excuse to be still entitled?

No it doesn't apply to Attendance Allowance. Attendance Allowance is factual based/black & white. Mobility isn't a feature of it. It is purely care needs that continue to exist after using all of the aids/adaptions and equipment that you can buy as well as considering how beneficial medication and surgery is.
  • I guess it is up to you tinkledom. I guess you can wear your halo with pride.

For others the money is essential for their very survival and ability to live an independent life.

Oh and PIP doesn't take into consideration medication actually. You can score merely 1 point for anything to do with medication. You only score higher points for prescribed therapy such a physio for Cystic Fibrosis.

This is described as "the pointless point" in the Benefits and Work guide to PIP. Also any aids you use do not take into consideration medication. If for example you have Arthritis and use simply 1 aid such as a lightweight pan you score the 2 points towards the 8 needed for the Standard rate,

The losers on PIP will be those who have difficulty moving around indoors, require supervision for behaviour and those with conditions such as epilepsy.

Those that might gain will be those with multiple co-existing conditions such as ME with Fibromialgia or say ME with a mental health problem.
