Lightinthebox.com sent us dangerous electrical equipment

My partner ordered some light fittings from lightinthebox.com and they came some time later, paid £100ish for two lights and then paid about £20ish customs.
His father is a qualified electrician and came round to install them, part of them were bent the wrong way and from what he could see if he did manage to bend them back, the rest of the lights looked so shoddy they were dangerous.
Since they've arrived a google search has shown numerous problems and were not the only ones. I want to complain officially of dangerous goods. Online they said they will pay for postage - however according to review online they will ask us to pay for it, promise to refund once goods arrive, and then never hear back from them again.
I have posted a complaint about this site before on here and had many people respond to say they've never had a problem. So I don't know what to believe, I will of course contact them but I am cautious of spending more money just to save a bit and be out of pocket anyway, even if they do refund us.

I looked on trust pilot, there are 2000 positive reviews...
However all of the reviewers have only ever posted one review, and all of them say something like "I thought the customer service would be bad but it wasn't they were great!" Or "I was worried the items wouldn't be good but I love it tell all your friends". All in bad English.
There is the odd negative review though, but they're lost in the diluge of postivie reviews.0 -

Yes ... do your Google search before buying ???0 -
How did you pay for the lights? And how long ago?
You may be able to do a chargeback on account of faulty of substandard goods, but you may have to argue the point with your card issuer/bank.0 -

Buy British, have problems and you can get advice.0 -
bris, even buying British (as in labelled as "Made in Britain") is no guarantee - I'm sure that a company can buy the parts/ingredients to make a product from inside or outside the EU and still label that product as "Made in Britain" if they make it in the UK.0

I don't think bris's point was that buying British would get better quality goods. It was that buying from a British trader means you are covered by UK consumer protection legislation. Buy British and have a problem then we can point out what rights you have. Buy Chinese and have a problem then what can we do?0 -
