I've just tried taking out the battery and charging it that way. No response. Put it back in then turned it out and it died on me0

It could be a faulty (shorted) battery.
To check if this is the case, simply take the battery out and plug the power unit into the laptop.
It should still turn on and operate normally without a battery fitted if the charger is okay.0 -

Either way the charger will be able to provide enough power to get the laptop going, and if it can't then the charger must be faulty.Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car

What other computing devices do you have? A desktop?
If so, you can take the HDD out of the laptop, and connect it as a secondary drive in the desktop. Then just copy/paste.
