Bluetooth car phone muting audio

I have a Nexus 5 (Android KitKat). When I connect this paired phone to the car it mutes the car radio on connection. It used to only mute the radio when a call was made/received as it supposed to do
I have tried another paired phone and it works fine
So the bluetooth in the car is working OK
How do I listen to the radio when the Nexus phone is connected?

Have you tried unpairing it and then repairing it? Whenever i have a prob with my cars bluetooth this solves it:beer:0

Tried that several times no joy!0 -
UPDATE
I discovered a work around
I installed an app 'Auto Blue tooth', which only turns the blutooth on when a incoming call is detected
This way I can listen to my car radio, but its still a mystery to me why it doesn't work as it should
