New Cur Account letter can see sort code and acc number

Just had my welcome pack for new current account opened tuesday.
Through the cellophane it shows my name, address and right underneath my new sort code and account number for anyone to see.
Not the name of the bank but can the numbers be used online for example, to set up direct debits or any other payments if it was passed on to tricky people etc.
Should i phone up the bank to complain, is there a real risk of fraud?.

  • And everyone you have ever sent a cheque to has those detail too

The Direct Debit Guarantee is there as the fail safe because it is relatively easy to set up a DD. All they can do is that or deposit money into your account

Tiny risk of fraud. You disclose this information every time you write a cheque.

    The bank stands any losses.

    Nothing to worry about.

    Doesn't make much difference.

The risk of fraud is still minescule.

I would complain but don't expect anything more than an apology. Barclays Stockbrokers Ts&Cs said not to reveal my account number to anyone yet they printed it on the envelope of a letter that they sent me. When I complained they responded (without reading my letter it seems) with a standard letter about information sometimes moving into the envelope window. My envelope had no window!

The difference between cheque writing and this is that one chooses who to give a cheque to. The bank should bear any financial loss but there is a potential for great inconvenience if the information is misused. The more people that get to know the information the greater the risk.

Note Jeremy Clarkson's over confidence. The report said that he lost money. I assume that the bank decided not to refund as he had not taken reasonable care with his bank account details.

slight risk, but really as long as it was delivered ok not not misdirected to joe blogs down the street you should be fine.

After all only people who would see it would be the bank that sent it and the postal staff that delivered it, and to be honest if you had either a dodgy post man or bank staff they could have just opened the letters any way to see what they are (especially as many banks have the return address on them on the back of the envelope so may know from a bank any way).

The same details are also on the front of (most/all?) debit cards, so anybody you hand your card to can see it. Admittedly, only the consumer usually handles the card these days with Chip & Pin, but there's still the possibility somebody else in line or the cashier could see the details.

These details aren't kept quite as confidential as PIN numbers and I think the more lax attitude rightly reflects that there's less scope for wrongdoing.
This is everybody's fault but mine.

Still a lax and lazy attitude from the letter senders which should not happen despite the slight risk.
I will let them know just to feel better, the letter in the envelope could not move so no sliding around to make numbers visable in the window, it was packed like that, very poor.

  • Hi

I just received a bank statement today.

It has my name, address, sort code, account number, my banks address and I guess if I was still working it would have my employers details.

All these sort of details aren't as private as many people think they are.

Yes but were they on show for anyone in the sorting office or postman to see?
