Yep, the rest of the day has been a lot better Cheery, thank you. Supervision was great to do it with an old mate, who's mentioned a conference in November thats going to be aired online - can't find it on the website yet, but thats going to be good value CPD if they ever publicise it.

I went off this afternoon and found a Pet and Garden store I didn't know of - systemic weedkiller ahoy - Pippi, if you read this, don't worry - its for the weeds that are disrupting the crazy paving, not for the garden, never fear :)

I passed a tile store, with loads of offcuts ... :o and I do love skipdiving. So I checked with a staff member, and took 3 tiles, all different - the aim is to smash them up, and use them as a splashback for the handbasin in my 2nd loo, I'm getting a bit tired of everything I put in being all tasteful and smooth, I'd like a few clashing tiles :D hopefully that might get done some time over Christmas, and if I *do* do it, thats about £25 saved on posh tiles, and also the money to pay a tiler - I can't ask a tiler to do these, its going to be a bit organic

Lots of nice hot water is on (I left the boiler on too long :o) so I'm off for a luxurious shower, not a utilitarian one :D I may be gone some time ...

  • The £300 figure assumes that you're trying to create a perpetuity (i.e. the money won't run out). For the sake of simplicity, 4% has been the safe withdrawal rate over the last 100 years or so for a balanced portfolio, although it's likely that it will be lower in future as global growth has slowed.

    £1/mth expense = £12/year cost
    100% / 4% = 25
    £12 * 25 = £300

If you don't have dependents/want to take it all with you, you could theoretically have a higher withdrawal rate.

edinburgher - can I just say 'thanks' to you for explaining that so simply :D I'd read often on MMM and ERE about people who eg changed mobile phone providers and that equated to a $X,000 saving on their retirement requirement. It pops up a lot in the comments sections too - and I wondered where the (total) figures came from - but now I see.

And thank you Karma for having these conversations and discussions on your thread - they are so important - as well as being interesting :D

Mind - y'all lost me a while back there with the Robert Powell stuff...... DP would have kept up, but me.......... :o:rotfl:

How would you do that, KC? We've got some grotty broken tiles in our front porch and I'd love to surprise Mrs E with a shiny mosaic style entrance :)

You are very welcome Greying, it's lovely to realise that I've made myself useful.

I had held off joining Swagbucks, as it looked like a lot of clicking for little return, so you have confirmed my fears

It's like some of the survey sites. There's two that I started, and I've stalled on £9.50 for both of them. As soon as I hit the £10.00 I'm cashing out, but the effort of checking for surveys each day, then being screened out all the time is really starting to annoy me!

Even worse, there's one where the cash out point is £6' and it's taken me two months to get to £3.65. So much effort for so little, it's just not worth it.

A couple of the sites work better me, so I'll keep on with them - when I do get a survey that I qualify for, I quite enjoy the process of completing the survey

You're very welcome :kisses3: and as for "hunny bun", I use it too ... that might be the American influence that crept into the UK via Liverpool (half a crown was always "half a dollar" when I was a child, for instance!).

Ed's good, isn't he :D and I'm slow, but I like to make sure I understand things that are really important :D

Ouchie, I don't think its the same case, sadly ... what I'm thinking of is the splashback for a washbasin I had installed just after I moved here, almost 4 years ago now - its just got wall at the back of it, and even though its just used for rinsing hands, it *does* get splashed. So I need tiles there, but as I say I'm quite bored with the plain stuff I've got, I'm not used to it  and this is an isolated little patch, a single splash back in the 2nd toilet, so I figure, what the h*ll ...

Anyway, these explain it better than I can:
    http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Mosaic-from-Broken-Tiles
    http://www.thejoyofshards.co.uk/projects/

I think I might go the tile cutter route - quite a few of the tiles I've picked up have rectangles in them, that would be convenient for the space. Its not an immediate project tho.

Where are the broken tiles you're thinking of, ed? Are they floor tiles? I just googled "replacing broken tiles" and quite a few links came up - I won't post them here, because I don't know any of them to trust them, but there's a couple of youtube videos that might suit you. Good Luck! And tell us how it goes :)

Yep ... I was somewhat taken in, and even since I joined its got worse - earlier this week, I was making 18 points simply for having the swaggie radio on in the background while I was at the laptop, and putting a captcha code in every 30 mins. It was classical music, so it was very pleasant :) but thats disappeared. The other thing is that you can get a few tiny points from playing computer games - but I use them quite addictively, and its bad for me on *so* many levels

Erm ... I have quite a lot of paid work today, in 3 separate chunks ... its practically full time for me! I'll be pleased if I can get the house tidy for the weekend. I would like to finish notetaking on the library book I'm using, but truly, I'm not expecting much extra from today.

Hope everyone has a good one :)
