Mad idea - is it possible ???

I have seen a carpet (discontinued line) which I just have to have.

Only trouble is - it does not fit my hall.

I have came up with this mad idea that I could get laminate/lino around the edges and have the carpet as a runner.

Would this be possible and how easy would it be to do?

My hall leads to my stairs (all open) so the laminate/lino would have to go to the edge/round the first drop in the stair (if you know what I mean), then have a carpet edge to edge going down my stairs.

Is this a mad idea?
Thanks for any advice.
Looking forward to the day I have nothing left to list on eBay

I am assuming that you mean to have lino or laminate over the whole floor (Not just round the edges as this would cause a trip hazard) and then use the carpet as a runner, but you would have to pay to have the edges bound and find some way of keeping the carpet in place.

Well, no actually, was hoping to have the carpet inserted in between the laminate/lino on each side with the carpet either glued down or some sort of gripper.

A rug on top of laminate is just as much as a trip hazzard as the edges of a runner.

Not sure I am 100% with you but I assume the idea is not to cover the hall in (say) lino then cover that with a runner? To avoid fraying, you can get glue on edge which although looks great (I made some rugs from off cuts) is expensive.

You might consider using your must have carpet as an insert to an off cut of contrasting carpet of the same thickness that will frame the insert, if you catch my drift. Your carpet can then be 'grown' to fit. Use hot glue gun and carpet tape to join the carpets together (carefully) practice first on some waste.

Frankly speaking, buying carpet that fits (and I like) would be the way I would go.

Oh, you are 100% with me OK.:D

This is the perfect solution I was looking for, may be a lot of work for someone but perfect solution.:T:j:T

It can be the same carpet that I am getting for my stairs and will all match in perfectly - Thank you !!!!!:)

ps what is this "glue on edge" you speak of?

I know I should just get a carpet that fits, but there is nothing that would even touch this carpet, in my eyes anyway.

Do you mean like in some old houses where they had a carpet running up the centre of the stairs with wood either side? But with laminate at the sides instead?

There the wood goes completely underneath the carpet, but the op means to insert the carpet between laminate or lino round the edges.

OP, if you know the brand of the carpet, could you not contact the manufacturer and ask where it was stocked, as another shop may have a larger piece for sale ? Perhaps posting the details on here would result in someone knowing where there is some available.

Personally, I wouldn't want to do anything patchwise as edges are always a problem.

I just don't see this working, given the intense wear and tear the hall carpet would get. Unlike a room carpet, traffic is not spread evenly, and I'd suspect any fix would fail - probably just out of warranty by the fitter. #8 above would be the way I'd go. The internet will surely find you a supplier of sufficient to do the job in one.
