  • Hi Mr Davies

I've taken a look over things for you and the debt owed was from your account closed back in 2006. OFGEM guidelines state we have no obligation to keep records for energy accounts for longer than 2 years, so therefore I can no longer provide you with a statement of accounts.

I can confirm that the debt was sold to a collections agency in August of 2007, and sometimes the debt is passed from them to alternative collection agencies. As you state in your email, it would by the collection agency that buys the debt (purchaser) that is responsible for updating your credit file.

Unfortunately I'm unable to let you know who currently hold the debt as we don't hold those records.

You may wish to contact Experian directly to see if they can update your credit file, but they are under no obligation to do this for you.

Please contact us should you need any help in the future and thank you for contacting British Gas.

We're listening, so tell us what you think - if you've got a moment please complete my survey to let me know how I've done.

    Kind regards

    David Bird

More bull from BG. If the default is in BGs name they are the ones who have to update the CRAs.

Think I would take them to the ombudsman and start threatening court action to be honest.
Still rolling rolling rolling...... :) <

Send them a screenshot of your credit report showing that it's their entry.
    What will your verse be?

  • My response was that the default was in their name and they need to remove it immediately. I will wait for a response. If they still go on like the last email I will let them know I am going to the ombudsman. I will also send them a screenshot of the entry. I don't know how they get away with things like this!
  • I emailed them with a screenshot of the entry on my credit file. This is their response

    Hi Mr Davies

Thanks for getting back on touch with the details of the default.

I have looked into this to try and get some details of the bill in question. This however has been unsuccessful and I haven't been able to locate the details. The best thing for you to do know would be to speak with our debt team. They may well be able to find something for you or at least advise you on what happens with regards to the credit file. This is not something that I can advise you of. The telephone number for our debt team is 0800 072 5310.

If you do have any other questions please get straight back to me.

We're listening, so tell us what you think - if you've got a moment please complete my survey to let me know how I've done.

I don't understand why he can't find someone who knows about this and get them to call you, but you might as well do what he says and try calling the debt team.

Let us know how you get on!

I will do matttye. I'm not to sure about calling them though. Everywhere I read people advise never to call them! only contact them via letters or email?

I'd dispute with the CRA, British Gas are a joke, they sent me debt collection letters when they upgraded their system a few years ago. Talking to them is so frustrating, you get nowhere, they are useless and don't investigate. View all 3 files and dispute it hopefully the CRA's can sort it. Finally if you haven't already leave British Gas they are one of the worst companies I've ever dealt with, I'd rather pay more money elsewhere.

Thanks. I raised a dispute with the CRA a few days ago. I haven't heard anything back yet. BG are a joke! I left British Gas in 2006 when i moved from the place i was living. I have never been with them since! That's why i was shocked to see that on my Credit report! To think of the problems they have probably caused me over the last few years! I don't know how they get away with it!
  • Just had another reply from BG

    Dear Mr Davies
I’ve been allocated a complaint you had raised regarding a default registered on your credit file.
I can see a colleague sent you an email advising that as the debt was from 2006 we are unable to provide a copy of the statement. I’m afraid the information provided by my colleague is correct and I am therefore unable to provide a copy statement.
My colleague has confirmed in his notes that you do not recall receiving a statement for the outstanding balance but there are several notes on your account in 2007 & 2008. These notes confirm you speaking colleagues and acknowledging the outstanding balance with confirmation you’d be making payment soon.
The debt was written off by British Gas on 25.11.2011 and a default registered for non payment.
If you would like to discuss your complaint further you can contact me directly on 0800 294 4326 or email me lee.carroll@britishgas.co.uk. My hours of work are 10am until 6pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If I don’t hear from you by 17th February 2014, I’ll assume you’re satisfied with this response and close the investigation.
    Kind regards

Are these people for real? "The debt was written off in 2011 and a default registered for non payment"???? This does not make any sense to me? and i defo did not acknowledge any outstanding balance and confirm i would be making payment soon! lol
