Just so you guys are aware...
I recently received my "Three" mobile phone bill which was slightly higher than what I usually pay, only by about £4. I looked at my itemised bill online and saw that I got charged for about 20 text messages that I sent on 1st January 2014. These were just standard text messages that i sent to various mates etc. wishing them a happy new year.
I rang Three to question why I had been charged for these texts when I had definitely not exceeded my free texts allowance and the messages did not contain attachments / pictures etc (which I know do incur a charge.)
To my surprise I was told because the network was busy on the 1st January, any texts sent on this day were charged at the normal rate and were NOT included within my texts allowance. After a bit of a debate on the phone, they agreed to refund costs of the texts on my next bill.
I have never had this problem before and the whole 'oh our network was busy so we charged you extra" story sound to me like a load rubbish!! I have never read anywhere in the contract that says they charge you extra based on network traffic, and I received no notification prior stating that texts sent on the 1st January would be chargeable.
Luckily for me it was only £4 extra (getting refunded!!), but if they are doing this to every customer this could potentially be a nice cash generator for them at the customers expense.
Check your bills and ensure you havent been ripped off too!!

You sure it wasn't MMS messages?0

            Nope. Absolutely 100% not.0

Ask Three whether they will be automatically refunding all the other customers who were mistakenly charged. If Three knows it has overcharged large numbers of people, then it should be applying automatic refunds.0

Some phones will convert group text messages to MMS, is it possible that's what happened?
The C/S's answer sounds like BS to me.0

£4 for 20 texts doesn't add up. That makes each text 20p which seems higher than it should be. It seems more likely that the phone has sent MMS instead. There has been a post on here recently highlighting that emoticons change texts to MMS on some smartphones could this not be the actual cause?0
