Interesting, our favourite town was Simione.

We stayed at the grand hotel gardione which was beautiful, if older in style.

  • I stayed in limone on lake garda and it was stunning I would definatley go back. I visited simione and that was beautiful too :)
  • Try Aqualux Hotel in Bardolino, great hotel & pools and bardolino is lovely. Great food n bars and you can walk to Garda. We also visited Venice for the day, tiring but easy to do by train (we are 40)
  • We've been as a couple twice and then with our 4 boys and each time has been wonderful.

The top end of the lake as a map will show is narrower and more mountainous, its popular with windsurfers if that's your thing. As has already been mentioned the bottom half of the lake - Malcesine and lower is more of a basin and you can't always see the otherside of the lake - we stayed in Bardolino. My recommendation would be to go B&B and enjoy the wide variety of options to eat out.

There are numerous ferry boats crossing the lake to allow you to enjoy a different resort when you fancy it - they are all very different. We hired a speed boat for the day and it was great fun and our boys loved swimming in the lake. It can seem strange at first sunbathing on the grass but it has the bonus of not carrying back sand between your toes!

So in our opinion not fuddy duddy and we would throughly recommend.
  • My choice would be Garda town, nice and central and the pretty bit starts around here.Nice interesting small town, good for the busses and a lovely lakeside walk. lots of restaurants. Malcasine also good but can get busy

We've stayed in Garda. Ages ranged from 15 to 59. Got out bikes, speedboat, kayaked, swam in lake, jumped off cliff rocks in malcesine, walked down mount baldo which was never ending and wouldn't advise anyone to do, may try cycling down next time. Great time. Nights are very busy but only restaurants shops, etc. we made our own fun. I thought it was an active holiday and fifteen year old preferred it to sitting round a pool all day. I had thought originally that we would be able to cycle round the lake but upon seeing it, it is like looking at the North Sea.
    ..
  • I can thoroughly recommend Malcesine as a place to base yourself. We stayed at the Hotel Capri which is family run and in a great lakeside location with an easy walk into town. We will definitely go back one day. Highlights were a trip up Monte Baldo, the Dolomites, Verona, and just using the lake ferries to visit places like Limone and Riva. One of the most picturesque places I've ever been to.
  • I'm going there in June on a coach tour, so there will be a busload of OAPs wandering around then.
