Basically there should be an icon in iTunes that looks like a rectangle with a triangle overlapping the bottom of it ()

Click this should bring up your options of devices to play from, one will be Computer and you should also see whatever your appletv is called. Select the AppleTV and then whatever you play (music or video) will be broadcast to the appletv and played through whatever its connected to (assuming its all turned on)

I had the same problem a while ago after updating my second generation unit to the latest version of the software. There were many threads on the web about Apple TV units being bricked after this update. The only options were to reset or take to an Apple store.

I tried the total reset and it's fine now.

You have nothing to lose by doing a total reset.

I did a complete reset to no avail but I got the apple tv in office and it works fine here, I then called my ISP and they said they are having some issues on there end and are looking to resolve it asap. I dont know how true this is to be honest but I will wait for a day or two and try again.
