Thanks Divingmad, I will come over and check out your diary too!

Well the last couple of days have delivered a series of financial shocks, but have they brought down the house built on sand or are our finances on a more stable, rock like footing .............

    The bad news:-

    1. NHS have refused to fund my bridge - £2,000
    2. Dishwasher has come to a grinding, smoky halt - £500.00
    3. DS needed another lot of stuff for his expedition - £139.00

    The good news:-

DH emergency fund has gone up, unbeknown to me, to £8,000 from £6,000 at the beginning of the year, he says this is primarily due to:-

    1. A wage rise of £120.00 a month.
    2. Not buying lunches as I have done one for him, almost every day this year, saving him £100.00 a month.
    3. I have been putting diesel in when mystery shopping - saving him £50.00 a month.
    4. I have not been touching the joint account - All the rest

The Plan – Use £2,000 of DH emergency fund!:)

I have negotiated with the dental practice a significant discount on my teeth. I am getting a new three tooth bridge and three matching veneers, the other side, for £1695.00. This will be in the finest porcelain and will give me "film star teeth" and I am not talking about Godzilla here (she says hopefully).

DH has negotiated a cracking deal on a Bosch dishwasher.

DS is contributing £50.00 towards the expedition costs and the CPP claim form has been filled in, for DH, which should cover the difference.

We live to fight another day and today I am extremely grateful for DH and DS! They have saved my bacon!

  • No. They haven't saved your bacon. You are all working together towards the same outcome. I spent a not so small fortune on dental work last December. It's not noticeable to others but makes me feel so much better. It's a good investment

Fantastic news on the emergency fund cash coming to the rescue, exactly what its there for. And I second INOD's comments about you all being in this together.

    Well done to you all.

Thanks, both of you, for your support. In truth I feel a bit guilty, because DS and DH are both very good with money. DS has been given quite a bit of cash, from my father, over the years and has a tidy savings pot and DH is an MSE dream, Martin should show case him, but it is only recently that I have begun to really appreciate this facet of his personality. It used to be our main bone of contention as I thought he was a bit tight and risk averse and he thought I was a spendthrift, never worrying about the future, just determined to enjoy the present.

The reality is that for 13 years, up to 2008, I did have a very good job, earning over 50k a year and DH was making really good money too, so our combined income was more than double what it is now, but it has steadily declined since then (both industries hit hard by recession) and I have really struggled to adjust to this and move from being a spender into a saver.

DH is delighted with the transformation, this year, and encouraging me in every way he can. You are right though, this is the first time that we are really working together as a financial team, and it feels good, though it has taken a bit of getting used to. I don't hide anything now, it is full disclosure!!

More good news on mum INOD, she has got the increase to her pension credit (£60.00 more) along with the higher rate attendance allowance so her income has gone up by approximately £500.00 a month, almost double what she was living on previously. As long as her spending doesn't triple she should be fine!! I am really grateful for all the advice I got from these boards that facilitated this.

Flanno, let me know when you are up and running, maybe you could ping the administrator an e-mail and they will help you here, I will see if can find a link to them, I know I have contacted them in the past.

    Hiya,
They say things come in threes....and it certainly did, but great that there was an unexpected and welcome result, that's what the emergency fund is for.

I am still trying to get my OH to budget properly but she has more sand to excavate before she sees daylight. icon9.gif
You are all working together and the results are amazing:j

It has only taken DH 21 years Divingmad, so don't lose hope. I am slightly irritated by the fact that we are finally working on the same page, and it turned out, at the end of a long, long tustle to be his page after all.

That is just the dominatrix in me that is struggling to be tamed ;), I am sure that there are merits in a submissive role :rotfl:, but think we will settle on equality wherever that finally rests, as DH is no woman's muppet, and I am a free spirit!!

Great news about your mum and the increase in her living allowance, thats fantastic.

  • Irish gremlins at work! Well done for the great start to the month.

Today I have squeezed in a mystery shop at a high street chemist and I got some tinted moisturiser, a new lipstick and matching nail varnish, for May, on 3 for 2, and using a voucher, it came to just over my re-imbursement for the visit! I love freebies.

Also my John Lewis vouchers came today for free coffee and cake, once a month for a year, and I have just applied for DH and dear Aunt too.

Finally, I have put four items on ebay, two of which have sold already on buy it now, for £15.00 in total.

    Onwards and upwards x.
